He was Tran Thi Kien (1260 - 1330) from Dong Trieu district, now Dong Trieu town, Quang Ninh province.
Before becoming an official, he was a guest of Tran Quoc Tuan. After being recommended by Hung Dao Vuong, King Tran Nhan Tong trusted him and appointed him to many different positions, including the position of An Phu Su of Thien Truong (Nam Dinh). That was a privilege for Tran Thi Kien, because according to the Tran Dynasty's regulations, only those who were especially trusted by the court, who were royal relatives, were allowed to hold the position of An Phu Su of Thien Truong.
According to history books, Tran Thi Kien was knowledgeable about the Book of Changes. Before our army and people waged two resistance wars against the Mongol-Yuan invaders for the second (1284-1285) and third (1287-1288), he accurately predicted the outcome of the war.
Being a fair and upright person, with a talent for judging, he also held many important positions in the Tran Dynasty court, such as: Inspector, concurrently holding the positions of Dai An Phu Su Kinh Su, Nhap Noi Hanh Khien Huu Giam Nghi Dai Phu, Ta Boc Xa...

While serving as the An Phu Su of Thien Truong, someone brought him a tray of food. Tran Thi Kien asked why. The person replied that he gave it because he lived nearby and had no other intention.
However, the next day after the offering of the feast, someone came to ask for help. As soon as the person finished explaining his matter, the official Thi Kien immediately threw up, meaning to return the feast from the previous day, causing the person who asked to leave to lose face and from then on did not dare to ask for help again.
Thanks to his integrity, he was promoted to the position of Inspector by King Tran Anh Tong. Whenever there was a lawsuit, he used reason to refute it, and when the case came, he found a way to deal with it. Therefore, his contemporaries praised him for being good at judging lawsuits, like Bao Gong.
Historian Ngo Si Lien, when talking about the case of Tran Thi Kien, also praised: "Thi Kien acted too strangely to correct the begging habit of people at that time, just like An Anh was too frugal to correct the extravagance and usurpation of Quan Trong".
