Green materials - an effective solution for the construction industry to achieve the goal of net zero emissions

Thời ĐạiThời Đại27/09/2023

According to statistics from the Ministry of Construction, construction works use about 40% of energy sources, account for 50% of emissions, create 33% of carbon emissions and 40% of solid construction waste. The use of green building materials not only helps reduce electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, but also contributes to improving living space.

Outstanding advantages

According to the Center for Equipment, Environment and Labor Safety, Institute of Construction Materials: "Green construction materials are materials that use natural resources in an environmentally friendly way, have the ability to be recycled and decomposed green".

Green materials must meet at least one of the following criteria: Non-toxic materials; materials made from recycled materials and must be recyclable; materials that save resources, use energy and water efficiently; materials with a long life cycle; materials that consider environmental issues during production, use and recovery after use.

Green materials in construction include: XPS insulation foam; Unburnt bricks; Eco-roofing panels; Split stone; Lightweight concrete...

Mr. Nguyen Quang Hiep - Deputy Director of the Department of Construction Materials (Ministry of Construction), developing green materials has many outstanding advantages. These are: reducing greenhouse gas emissions; saving energy in the production process chain; taking advantage of waste sources from industries; easy to recycle; helping to save resources and minerals. Using green materials also helps the environment to be cleaner, safer for health as well as helping the construction industry and other industries to develop sustainably.

Therefore, developing green materials is becoming an inevitable trend and a target of the Vietnamese construction materials manufacturing industry, aiming to achieve the goal of zero net emissions by 2050 as committed by the Prime Minister at the COP26 Conference. In particular, the sector managed by the Ministry of Construction is responsible for reducing 74.3 million tons of CO2 equivalent.

According to Ms. Luu Thi Hong, Deputy Director of the Institute of Construction Materials, promoting the use of green construction materials is also one of the urgent solutions to achieve the goals: low emissions, energy efficiency, resource saving and safety for users.

Perfecting the legal framework on green materials

According to a report by German Watch, Vietnam ranks 5th among the 10 countries most seriously affected by climate change. Along with that, according to statistics from the Institute of Construction Materials, construction works use about 17% of water resources, 40% of energy sources, 25% of exploited wood, accounting for 50% of emissions, creating 33% of carbon emissions and 40% of solid construction waste. Therefore, the traditional construction materials manufacturing industry is considered the cause of environmental pollution. Therefore, increasing the use of green materials is considered the most optimal method for the construction industry.

However, the application of green, environmentally friendly construction materials in construction projects still faces many difficulties such as: incomplete and inconsistent legal framework; limited capacity and technology level for producing green materials in Vietnam; high cost; not yet competitive with other materials.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Hiep - Deputy Director of the Department of Construction Materials (Ministry of Construction): To promote green, environmentally friendly and energy-saving materials more strongly, it is necessary to first build a legal corridor for green materials.

“Only with a legal framework can we have specific regulations to create financial policies to provide incentives for research and development and investment in the production of green materials,” said Mr. Hiep.

Along with that, build standards, criteria and processes for businesses to produce green materials. Propaganda to raise awareness for subjects participating in the field of construction investment, those working in State management from central to local levels, investors, consultants, contractors, construction management and operation units and people. Only then can green materials be widely popularized, contributing positively to sustainable development.

According to the Ministry of Construction, the country currently has about 300 green, energy-saving buildings with a total floor area of about 7.2 million square meters, including housing, urban, and industrial park projects.
