At the experience sharing session, issues related to coordination between the VAR referee team, the referee team on duty, technicians, and coordination with the television team were discussed. The remaining issues, the goal of coordination between departments in the next phase, and actively promoting the effectiveness of VAR in organizing the tournament were also raised.
In addition to bringing positive effects and fairness, VAR also caused a lot of controversy. The most prominent was the match between SLNA and Nam Dinh Club in round 12 of V-League. At that time, the away team Nam Dinh Club scored a goal in the minute by To Van Vu and won 1-0. VAR checked for more than 5 minutes and the goal was recognized. In the following days, many fans were not satisfied and thought that Nam Dinh Club's goal was scored when a player was in an offside situation, VAR made a mistake.

VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan shared: “We always have challenges ahead. In the past 13 rounds, VAR technology has played an important role in making the tournament fairer, greatly supporting the referees in managing the match, thereby contributing to improving the quality of the tournament. Subjectively, I highly appreciate the focus and efforts of the referees and technicians in operating VAR.”
In fact, after 13 first-leg matches of the current V-League season (2023-2024), VAR technology has been applied but only at football fields from Ha Tinh to the north. Football fields in the south have not yet applied this technology. Therefore, Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan hopes that VAR will play its full role towards the goal of having VAR in all matches.
“In order for VAR to maximize its role, I suggest that the VFF Referee Board, VAR referees and technicians need to actively discuss and agree more on the process, and come up with optimal solutions to ensure maximum efficiency in operation. Situations must be handled faster, while still ensuring absolute accuracy.
Your task in the coming time is to try your best to ensure the quality of the operating staff. The referee board must ensure the quantity and quality of personnel so that as soon as we have enough facilities, we can proceed to apply VAR in all V-League matches."
VAR will be improved towards being applied to all matches
The appearance of VAR in V-League is helping the tournament become fairer, supporting the referee team's decisions to be more accurate. Coaches in V-League have also repeatedly voiced their support for this appearance. However, to reach accurate decisions requires the referees on the field, the VAR team, and assistants to coordinate closely.
Sharing in the training session, Mr. Dang Thanh Ha - Head of the VFF Referee Board emphasized: “Relying on VAR is very dangerous. It is absolutely not allowed to happen. VAR is only a support tool, not a decisive role. The referee on the field is the one who makes the decision and must do it.”

According to the organizers' schedule, the second leg of V-League 2023 - 2024 will officially take place on March 30 and 31. Most notably, the three matches will be The Cong Viettel vs. Quang Nam Club (March 30), Thanh Hoa Club vs. Hanoi Police Team (March 30) and Hanoi Club vs. Nam Dinh (March 31). These matches greatly affect the tournament's situation, so VAR technology will also be applied.
