Music production group Universal Music filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic in the US federal court of Tennessee, alleging widespread and systematic copyright infringement of song lyrics.

The lawsuit states that in the process of building and operating AI models, Anthropic illegally copied and disseminated a large number of copyrighted works.
For example, when Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude asked about the lyrics to Katy Perry's song Roar , the software produced a near-identical copy of the original lyrics, infringing on the copyright of the song's owner, music producer Concord.
The lawsuit argues that AI companies should be subject to the same laws as other technological devices, from printers to copiers to web crawlers. In addition to Universal Music, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit include several other music publishers, including Concord and ABKCO.
