Countering fake news, digital transformation of journalism on the agenda of ASEAN Information Ministers

TPO - Many important contents on promoting digital knowledge creation, information security, responding to fake news, digital transformation of journalism... will be discussed at the 16th ASEAN Ministers of Information Meeting (16th AMRI) taking place in Da Nang.

On the afternoon of September 18, the Ministry of Information and Communications held a press conference for the 16th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Information (16th AMRI).

Accordingly, the 16th ASEAN Ministers on Information Meeting , the 7th ASEAN Ministers on Information Meeting + 3 (7th AMRI + 3) and related senior officials meetings will take place from September 20 to September 23 in Da Nang.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam - Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, "Media : From Information to Knowledge for a Resilient and Responsive ASEAN" was chosen as the theme throughout the entire agenda.

“The theme highlights the role and mission of the media sector in the new era. That is to make information the driving force for development, not only providing information, but also promoting the transformation from information to knowledge, to build a self-reliant ASEAN, strengthening internal capacity, resilience and adaptation,” said Mr. Lam.

According to the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, reality shows that the press and media sector in our country and the press and media environment in the region are facing problems on a global scale.

The mainstream media is facing increasing competition from new media methods, facing a complete change in reading, viewing and listening habits from information users.

"The advantages, experiences and solidarity within the ASEAN bloc allow us to find good solutions to the problem of digital transformation of mainstream media to dominate cyberspace and lead information; find models in digital space associated with economic efficiency, control business models based on communication in cyberspace; propose regional solutions to handle fake news and false news; limit and control the negative impacts of new technologies...", Mr. Lam said.

According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Lam, the conference is an opportunity for information ministers of ASEAN countries and partners to discuss and issue joint statements to address current information challenges.

At this conference, Vietnam will share initiatives and proposals from the perspectives of state management agencies, media agencies, and digital technology enterprises that are contributing to changing the face of the information sector.

"We have very specific communication methods, digital transformation to bring information to people quickly, turning people's information access channels at the grassroots into two-way channels to exchange information, and resolve problems as quickly as possible," said Mr. Lam.

The main events and activities taking place include: the 16th AMRI Ministerial Conference, the 7th AMRI+3 Conference; the 20th SOMRI Conference and SOMRI+3, SOMRI + Japan.

The 16th AMRI Ministerial Meeting is a forum for ASEAN Ministers in charge of information to discuss and provide directions and guidance to promote cooperation among ASEAN countries in the fields of: Press; Radio and Television; Internet (Social Networks, Websites, Internet-based communication) and Raising awareness about ASEAN.

The 7th AMRI+3 Conference is a forum for information ministers of ASEAN countries and the three dialogue countries (China, Korea, Japan) to discuss initiatives, priorities, orientations as well as promote cooperation with partner countries in the information field.

The 20th SOMRI Conference and SOMRI+3, SOMRI+ Japan are meetings of senior officials in charge of information of ASEAN countries with dialogue countries to discuss the contents submitted to the AMRI Conference and AMRI+3.

Before the 16th AMRI Conference, many activities related to hot issues of information and information security took place, such as: ASEAN Regional Forum on Responding to and Handling Fake News in Cyberspace; ASEAN Workshop on Digital Transformation of Journalism - Creating Digital Knowledge.

In addition to the official meetings, sideline activities at the event include: Bilateral meetings between countries; ASEAN photo exhibition; ASEAN online film/photo experience area (ASEAN Identity Platform, National Information Portal vietnam.vn); Da Nang's booth and booths of 7 Vietnamese digital technology enterprises: Viettel, VNPT, FPT, VTC, VNPost, S-Connect and VSTC.
