On August 14, in a daily video, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised Ukraine's "good progress" in Kursk province, saying that Kiev is achieving its strategic goals in this operation.
He called on partners to allow long-range strikes on targets inside Russian territory, stressing: “The bolder the partners’ decisions, the less Russian President Vladimir Putin can do.”
AFP news agency on the same day quoted Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko after meeting with President Zelensky and other officials declaring that the country's army will allow the evacuation of civilians from Kursk province and create a buffer zone there.
“The creation of a buffer zone in Kursk region is a step to protect our border communities from daily hostile shelling,” Mr. Klymenko said.
Meanwhile, according to Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, the military forces "plan to open humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians, both towards Russia and towards Ukraine".
Ukraine also plans humanitarian operations, including those with the support of international organizations.
In another development, Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said he discussed with his Russian counterpart the issue of Russian prisoners captured during a cross-border raid in Kursk province.
Russia has not commented on the above information, while the country's TASS news agency quoted First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky as saying that Moscow will not ask the UN Security Council to meet on Ukraine's attack on the Kursk Region.
He noted that now is not the time to call for a Security Council meeting, stressing: " We have made an assessment and frankly, it is up to Ukraine to be able to convene a meeting, given the losses they are suffering in this completely reckless and insane operation."
Ukrainian armed forces launched a surprise attack on Russia’s Kursk region on August 6, killing 12 civilians and injuring 121, including 10 children. More than 120,000 people have left or been evacuated from the border districts of the Kursk region.
According to the Defense Ministry, Kiev has lost up to 2,300 servicemen, at least 37 tanks and more than 32 armored personnel carriers since the start of fighting in the Kursk region.
In the latest developments related to the situation in Kursk, Russian military units said they did not notice any activity by the Ukrainian air force in the area.
