Gas flows from Russia to the European Union (EU) via the Ukrainian transit route will be blocked from December 31, because the last trade agreement between Moscow and Kiev will end after 5 years.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it will not extend the gas transit agreement.
As for Russia, this country has signaled its readiness to negotiate an extension, but Ukraine has not changed its decision.
Several EU member states, including Slovakia and Hungary, continue to receive Moscow gas via pipelines passing through Kiev.
Against this backdrop, Slovakia said it wanted to continue using the transit route via Ukraine.
SPP has regularly voiced support for efforts to maintain gas transit through the pipeline, despite the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
This is because alternative routes would be more expensive and face the risk of blockages in other pipelines.
EU energy ministers have recently discussed replacing gas supplies from Russia with Azerbaijan. However, no specific details have been disclosed so far.
SPP said that no agreement is yet in the pipeline to replace Russian gas.
Reuters (UK) news agency said that no agreement has been reached on replacing Moscow's gas flow. It is also possible that a potential agreement will be approved by the end of this year or early next year.
Norway is currently the EU's largest supplier of natural gas, accounting for around 30%.
According to Oil Price , Europe's problem is energy security. This is what motivates countries in the region to try to fill up their energy reserves before winter begins.
The EU’s stockpiles are now at a record 95%, which is considered sufficient for Europe if the region faces mild weather this winter.
