The replacement of General Zaluzhnyi, who had clashed with President Zelensky over military strategy and other issues, comes after Ukraine's counter-offensive in the war with Russia, which began in the middle of last year, has not yielded the expected results.
Reuters on February 3 quoted a source close to Mr. Zelensky's office as saying that the two also disagreed on new military mobilization efforts, in which the Ukrainian president opposed Mr. Zaluzhnyi's proposal to mobilize an additional 500,000 soldiers.
However, the source also said that the process of removing Mr. Zaluzhnyi from the position of commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces is currently delayed because officials have not yet decided who will replace him.

Another source said the White House had not expressed a view on plans to replace General Zaluzhnyi.
"I want to emphasize that the White House's response is that we do not support or oppose their sovereign decision. The White House expressed that Ukraine has the right to make sovereign decisions about its personnel," the source revealed.

The Washington Post was first to report that Ukraine had informed the White House of plans to remove Mr. Zaluzhnyi.
US officials told Ukraine they had no objection to firing General Zaluzhnyi, according to a source close to the Ukrainian president's office. "The US agreed to let Ukraine remove him," the source said.
Sources said there were no details yet on when the decision on removal would be made. "At this point, both sides (the president and the commander-in-chief) have paused to consider what the future holds and the status quo will be maintained until further notice," a source said.
