Vocational school admissions: Little joy, much worry

The new school year has passed a week, and many vocational education institutions in Ho Chi Minh City are excited because they have met their enrollment targets. However, there are still vocational schools that are "thirsty" for students and are continuing to "roll out the red carpet" to invite candidates.

Many schools have good enrollment

On the morning of September 5, District 12 Technical and Economic College held the opening ceremony of the new school year for 1,587/1,750 students, reaching 90.68% of the enrollment target for the 2024-2025 school year. The school has 14 training majors and most of them have met their enrollment targets. The majors that students are interested in and applying for are: Auto maintenance and repair (226/200 targets); Beverage preparation and service techniques (209/200 targets); Korean language (56/50 targets)...

Master Tran Nguyen Thuc, Principal of the school, excitedly said: “This is the second year the school has achieved positive enrollment results. There are many reasons for this result, but in general, it is due to the synchronous and spacious investment in the school and classrooms; especially the close connection with over 50 businesses to ensure output for students.”

Similarly, Ho Chi Minh City Vocational College, Thu Duc College of Technology, Cao Thang Technical College, College of Technology II, Ho Chi Minh City College of Construction, Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics... also enrolled 80%-100% of the target.

Dr. Tran Kim Tuyen, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City Vocational College, said that by September 5, the school had recruited 3,249 out of 4,810 students, including full-time college, intermediate and continuing education programs. The occupations that exceeded the target were Automotive Technology, Graphic Design, Food Processing and Information Technology (software application).

Master Tran Van Tu, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics, shared that the school's enrollment target is 3,230 (2,865 for college level, 365 for intermediate level), and has currently recruited 2,700 college level students and 100% of intermediate level students. Majors in the economic group that attract candidates include Marketing, Logistics, Accounting, Commercial Business, Import-Export Business, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, and Hotel Management. "These majors all have more favorable enrollment signals than previous years, and more than half of the majors have almost filled their enrollment targets," said Master Tran Van Tu.

In the secondary level, many schools also recruited 60%-80% of their quota. Hung Vuong Technical and Technology College expects to recruit 650/750 students for 12 training majors by the end of September. The school continues to recruit and strives to recruit the remaining 100 students by the end of October. Nguyen Tat Thanh College has recruited nearly 400/590 students...

The "knot" needs to be untied

According to a report by the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City, in the past 8 months, vocational training institutions in the city enrolled nearly 140,000 students, including 4,624 college students, about 4,000 intermediate students, 125,706 elementary and continuing education students. Compared to the same period in 2023, enrollment results increased by 12%. However, compared to the 2024 target, enrollment results for new vocational education levels reached more than 42.58%.

Mr. Nguyen Chi Thanh, Head of the Department of Vocational Education, Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City, commented that although the enrollment results exceeded 12% compared to the same period last year, the majority were concentrated in elementary level occupations and training courses under 3 months; meanwhile, the enrollment of colleges and intermediate schools was not as expected. This problem stems from the fact that information about vocational schools is not available on the General Enrollment Support System of the Ministry of Education and Training, leading to the majority of parents and students not having the conditions to access, learn or creating a mentality of concern about the quality of vocational schools.

Some other reasons leading to poor enrollment are: some units do not perform enrollment effectively, not attracting students; some units do not update reports on the electronic information system, so the data does not fully reflect enrollment results...

Sharing the current situation that vocational schools are facing, the principal of a college in Ho Chi Minh City said that since the Covid-19 pandemic, non-public schools have faced many difficulties, from renting land to building new classrooms to inadequate policies from the State and local authorities...

“Although we have found many solutions, the enrollment results have been in an “inverted pyramid” state in recent times. Schools continue to promote enrollment in many forms, from giving scholarships, exempting and reducing tuition fees for students, ensuring job opportunities when they graduate to investing in modern teaching equipment… Hopefully, by the end of the year, we will be able to recruit 70%-80% of the target,” said the principal.

Dr. Dang Van Sang, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City Polytechnic College, proposed: “To remove difficulties for vocational schools in enrollment, vocational schools need the support of the Ministry of Education and Training, to remove the “bottleneck” by uploading vocational school enrollment information to the Ministry of Education and Training’s General Enrollment Support System. Only then can learners access information quickly, accurately and trust in the training quality of vocational schools.”

Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City Le Van Thinh noted: “In order for the enrollment work to achieve results, schools must first focus on reviewing and correcting shortcomings in the training organization process; not committing administrative violations in the field of vocational training to avoid being fined; at the same time, it is necessary to proactively apply more effective enrollment methods than the ones currently being implemented. In addition, it is necessary to coordinate with media and press agencies to bring information to society about training professions, job opportunities at home and abroad, and opportunities to study at a higher level…”
