According to regulations, students taking the 2025 high school graduation exam will take four subjects, of which two are compulsory: math and literature. The remaining two subjects students can choose from among foreign languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry, biology, economic and legal education, technology and information technology.
However, in reality, students can only choose two subjects out of the four subjects they have registered to study since grade 10 (in principle, students must study the subjects they have chosen since grade 10 and cannot change them during the three years of high school).
Number of subjects does not cover all traditional combinations
In previous years, students took the high school graduation exam with four subjects, which were actually six: math, literature, foreign language, and a combination of natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology) or a combination of social sciences (history, geography, and civics). Students had studied these subjects throughout their three years of high school, so when taking the graduation exam, each student could choose the combination of subjects according to their wishes.
Meanwhile, with the 2018 General Education Program, students only take four high school graduation exams, and moreover, from grade 10, they can choose elective subjects without following the combination of natural sciences or social sciences as before. Not to mention, they can choose completely new subjects such as information technology, technology, economic education and law.
Because the number of high school graduation exam subjects is less and the combination of all four subjects of a student taking the high school graduation exam in 2025 may not cover the traditional three-subject combination of the previous admission, not to mention having to take into account the use of new subjects when considering admission, if universities continue to only use the traditional three-subject combination of the previous admission, it will be inappropriate.
Previously, although there were nearly 100 combinations of three subjects for admission, in reality, students only registered for centralized admission according to traditional exam groups (accounting for about 90% of the total number of candidates) such as group A00 (math, physics, chemistry), A01 (math, physics, foreign languages), B00 (math, biology, chemistry), C00 (literature, history, geography), D01 (math, literature, English). Each major usually recruits according to many combinations, a maximum of four, and also only around these five traditional admission combinations.
What universities are concerned about is whether a new admission combination has enough students to ensure the school's enrollment. Therefore, universities are still confused about announcing details of the admission method based on the 2025 high school graduation exam scores.
What is the solution for admission based on graduation exam scores?
Of course, the simplest technical solution for universities to consider admission based on high school graduation exam scores is not to consider each combination of three subjects separately as before, but only consider the total graduation exam score of all four subjects.
Actually, this idea is not new. Because according to the regulations applied for 2023 and 2024, when considering university admission based on many different combinations, the university will use the combination with the highest score for admission, not rigidly following only one combination.
However, this admission method will be criticized for reducing the meaning of career orientation in high school (grades 10 to 12), which is the stage to develop capacity according to the strengths and aspirations of each student, ensuring students access to careers, preparing for the stage of study after general education (college and university).
What universities are concerned about is whether a new admission combination has enough students to ensure the school's enrollment. Therefore, universities are still confused about announcing details of the admission method based on the 2025 high school graduation exam scores. Currently, there is no statistical data on the subject selection of students at high schools.
And perhaps this is one of the reasons why many schools have announced their 2025 enrollment plans early, all of which reduce enrollment quotas based on graduation exam scores, while the Ministry of Education and Training encourages universities to use high school graduation exam scores for enrollment.
36 ways to choose a combination
According to calculations, with the regulation that students taking the 2025 high school graduation exam will take four subjects, with two compulsory subjects being math and literature, and two elective subjects from the remaining nine subjects, there are 36 ways to choose a combination of four subjects for the high school graduation exam.
However, from the 36 ways to choose four high school graduation exam subjects, there are ways that cannot lead to a combination of three traditional entrance exam subjects, for example, candidates taking four subjects: math, literature, information technology, and technology.
