According to Naver news site, many star players and prestigious experts suggested appointing a domestic coach for the Korean national team. The Korean Football Association (KFA) has received this information and selected some typical names for the "hot" seat left by coach Klinsmann.
Accordingly, the head coach of the Korean U23 team - Mr. Hwang Sun-hong and the head coach of Ulsan Hyundai Club - Hong Myung-bo are the two most promising candidates. Coach Park Hang Seo is not on this list although many fans in Korea hope to see him return to the national team.
Mr. Park Hang Seo has not had the opportunity to lead the Korean team.
The reason why KFA decided to use a domestic coach was because of the "bad effect" that coach Jurgen Klinsmann brought. The German coach did not have the right attitude when the Korean team had to accept defeat. Coach Klinsmann could only laugh, blame the players or say that the Korean team "still played well".
In addition, the fight between Song Heung-min and Lee Kang-in and conflicts between many groups of players have made the KFA need a coach who can manage even the locker room. In the current situation, famous former domestic players who are respected by their juniors are a safer choice than foreign coaches.
Coach Hwang Sun-hong is such a person. The former player born in 1968 has participated in the World Cup 4 times with the Korean team. He is considered one of the best strikers in history with 50 goals in 103 appearances for the national team. Mr. Hwang went to Germany to play for the reserve team of Bayer Leverkusen 34 years ago.
Meanwhile, coach Hong Myung-bo led the Korean team to the 2014 World Cup. He also participated in the World Cup 4 times as a player. Hong Myung-bo once made his home fans "ecstatic" when he scored 1 goal and had 1 assist in Korea's historic 2-2 draw with Spain at the 1994 World Cup.
In addition to the two coaches mentioned above, some strategists working in the Korean National Championship (K.League) such as Kim Gi-dong and Choi Yong-soo are also being considered.
The KFA will appoint an official coach for the Korean national team after two matches against Thailand in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
