60 years ago, in order to save the failure of the Special War strategy, the US imperialists carried out sabotage in the North by air and naval forces to prevent the support of the great rear base in the North for the front line in the South, in order to weaken the fighting spirit and determination of our army and people to liberate the South. In the face of the US imperialists' actions, the Vietnam People's Navy and the army and people of the North proactively, creatively, intelligently, and bravely chased away the destroyer Maddox and burned 8 planes, and damaged many others. The victory in the first battle on August 2 and August 5, 1964 demonstrated the political strength and spirit of the entire nation, the will to dare to fight, to be determined to fight and to know how to win of the Navy and the army and people of the North. This is the first typical victory of the Navy after 9 years of establishment - opening the history of fighting and glorious victory of the heroic Vietnam People's Navy, the first victory of the army and people of the North in fighting against the destructive war of American imperialism.

In that battle, many officers, soldiers and people heroically sacrificed and were injured, including 78 naval officers and soldiers. At the memorial service, Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Bong - Political Commissar of the Navy - affirmed that the great sacrifices of the heroic martyrs contributed to the peace of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
