Vietnam is considered by international organizations to be one of the countries that has eliminated the gender gap fastest in the past 20 years, especially after 10 years of implementing the Gender Equality Strategy. However, gender stereotypes and the rate of women being abused and abused remain high because the ideology of male superiority and female inferiority is still deeply ingrained in the thinking of many families, especially in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

Step by step eliminating gender stereotypes

The "Leaders of Change Club" of the District Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities regularly organizes practical activities for members.

In order to gradually eliminate gender prejudice, recently, the Steering Committee of Project 8 "Implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children" under the National Target Program on socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas, period 2021 - 2025 of Tan Son district has directed the implementation in 83 extremely disadvantaged villages of 17 communes in the area.

The objective of Project 8 is to raise awareness, change prejudices, care for material and spiritual life, protect and care for women and children, achieve gender equality goals and focus on effectively solving some urgent problems of women and children in extremely difficult areas. The beneficiaries of the project are women and children in extremely difficult communes and villages, with priority given to ethnic minority women and girls in poor and near-poor households, victims of trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abuse, unsafe labor migration (returning from marriages abroad), women with disabilities, etc.

Comrade Dinh Thi Thu Hien - Chairwoman of the District Women's Union said: Recognizing the significance and importance of Project 8 for ethnic minority women and children, the Project Management Board develops a plan for each year; at the same time assigns specific targets to each commune; guides the establishment and operation of the model of Trusted Address in the community, Community Communication Team, "Leadership Club of Change". At the same time, the Project Management Board 8 strengthens guidance for all levels of the Women's Union in the area to proactively and flexibly organize the implementation of the contents and activities of Project 8 according to the plan.

Accordingly, in 2024, Tan Son district established and maintained the operation of 68 community communication teams; supported the establishment of 3 livelihood teams and groups (tea processing in Bong 1 area, Long Coc commune; a group linking to make fermented wine in U area, Thu Cuc commune; Muong Vac natural honey, Binh hamlet, My Thuan achieved 3-star OCOP products); consolidated and improved the quality of 5 trusted community addresses; newly established, improved capacity and supported the organization of activities of 18 Leaders of Change Clubs; organized 24 policy dialogues at commune and village level; 10 gender mainstreaming training sessions for village and hamlet officials; 80 communication conferences to improve capacity on "Changing thinking and working methods", eliminating gender stereotypes, building a safe living environment for women and children...

Members of the Community Communications Team participate in the contest to propagate the elimination of backward and harmful cultural practices.

After 3 years of implementation, the activities of Project 8 have basically followed the requirements of the Program's content orientation, being both comprehensive and specific, practical, and suitable to the actual situation in the locality. The models and activities of the Project have been welcomed and supported by the people and highly appreciated by local authorities and Party committees, contributing to raising awareness, changing thinking and working methods, enhancing economic power, eliminating gender stereotypes and prejudices, and giving opportunities for women and girls to affirm their roles in the family and participate in building and developing the community.

To effectively implement the contents and targets of Project 8 in 2025, the Women's Union at all levels of Tan Son district will continue to promote communication activities, mobilize changes in "thinking and doing" to eliminate gender prejudice and stereotypes in families and communities through direct and indirect communication channels; organize communication campaigns to eliminate gender prejudice and stereotypes, and build a safe living environment for women and children.
