Hello!

The exact causes of lower extremity varicose veins are currently unclear; however, several risk factors may contribute to impaired function of the one-way valves in the peripheral venous system. When these valves weaken, their ability to prevent blood from flowing backward decreases, leading to blood pooling in the legs.

In addition, several other factors can cause varicose veins in the lower limbs, including:

  • Lifestyle factors: This includes jobs that require standing or sitting in one place for long periods, lack of physical activity, or carrying heavy loads.
  • Women are 3-4 times more likely to encounter this than men.
  • Women who have been pregnant or have had multiple pregnancies are twice as likely to develop the disease as women who have never been pregnant.
  • Obese people often have diets low in fiber and vitamins.
  • The degenerative process due to aging.
  • History of phlebitis or thrombosis in the veins of the lower extremities.

In the early stages, lower extremity varicose veins have mild and transient symptoms that disappear with rest, so patients often pay little attention to them and easily overlook them.

As part of the "Collaboration with Experts" program of Dong Nai Hospital -2, on March 13, 2024, Dong Nai Hospital -2 organized a professional seminar on the topic: "Lower Extremity Varicose Veins" with the participation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Tho Tuan Anh - President of the Ho Chi Minh City Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, former Head of the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit - Cho Ray Hospital, Surgical Advisor at the University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, with over 40 years of experience in cardiovascular surgery. The program aims to improve the expertise and quality of medical examination and treatment at the hospital.
