Schengen zone to remove stamps on passports for tourists

Accordingly, from November 10, 2020, countries in the Schengen area are expected to apply a new automated Entry and Exit System (EES), replacing the current method of stamping passports. Visitors from outside the European Union (EU) entering Schengen will be recorded digitally.

European officials say the current system of manual stamping is time-consuming and does not provide much information about passengers, such as whether they have overstayed their visas. In addition, European authorities hope the new system will improve security in the EU and help reduce waiting times for travelers.

From November 2024, Schengen countries will no longer stamp visitors' passports upon entry.

The EES entry and exit method was scheduled to be launched in 2022 but has been pushed back to the end of this year. Under the new system, visa-free visitors to the Schengen area must apply for a travel permit online through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This will be implemented in phases after the EES is operational.

Which countries have the most powerful passports in the world in 2024?

Many Schengen countries have high passport rankings in the world.

What is EES?

The EES is an automated system that records the entry and exit of visitors from visa-free or short-stay visa-holding countries in the Schengen area. Each time a visitor enters or leaves the EU border, the system records their name, type of travel document, biometric data (fingerprints, facial image) as well as the date and place of entry and exit. The system also records cases of refusal of entry.

Under the new system, visa-free access visitors to the Schengen area will have to apply for a travel authorization online through the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). This will be rolled out in phases after the EES becomes operational.

The EES is an automated system that records the entry and exit of visitors from visa-exempt or short-stay visa-holding countries in the Schengen Area.

The reason for implementing this automated system, according to officials in the European Union (EU), is that the current manual stamping system is time-consuming, does not provide much information about passengers, and cannot detect whether passengers have overstayed or not.

The EES will replace the current method of stamping passports. European authorities hope that the new system will improve security in the EU and reduce waiting times for travelers. However, the aviation industry and many European countries have expressed concerns that there will be initial problems when implementing this method due to lack of preparation.
