French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed on February 28 that the European Union (EU) will be forced to impose retaliatory tariffs on iron and aluminum imported from the US.

The French leader said the EU would impose reciprocal tariffs after his US counterpart Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25% tax on the bloc's goods coming to the US.
If tariffs are imposed, "the Europeans will respond and therefore there will be reciprocal tariffs. Because we have to defend ourselves," AFP quoted President Macron as saying at a press conference in Porto with Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro during an official visit to the country.
“We must not be weak in the face of these (tariff) measures,” Macron said, adding that the Montenegrin prime minister said Europe must of course respond with the same tariffs as the US.
Trump decides to tax neighbors, Canada says it will 'respond strongly'
The White House owner announced on February 26 that he would impose a 25% tariff on the EU, like Canada and Mexico, starting next week, while China faces an additional 10% tariff.
President Trump said the new tariffs would hit products like cars, accusing the EU of taking advantage of the US.
On the same day, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called on Canada and Mexico to follow the US in imposing tariffs on China if they want to reverse President Trump's decision to impose a 25% tax on the two neighboring countries.
Bessent said Mexico has proposed to follow the US in imposing additional tariffs on Chinese imports, and said Canada should follow suit, Reuters reported. It was not clear whether Mexico wanted to impose the current 10% additional tariffs or the 20% tariffs the US is set to impose next week.
China has not commented on the above information.
