US Secretary of State calls this a proxy war, Russia agrees

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio considers the war in Ukraine a 'proxy war' between Russia and Western countries, including the US.

Speaking on Fox News on March 5, Mr. Rubio said that US President Donald Trump sees this conflict as "a long and stalemate war". "Frankly, this is a proxy war between two nuclear powers: the US, the country that is supporting Ukraine, and Russia. This war needs to end," Mr. Rubio emphasized.

The US secretary of state said it was not a strategy to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine “as much as we can for as long as we can.” Secretary Rubio said Washington wanted both Russia and Ukraine to resolve the conflict and “we asked Ukraine not to sabotage it.”

US Secretary of State calls Russia-Ukraine conflict a proxy war, what does the Kremlin say?

"Finding a way to end the conflict requires concessions from both sides, but we have to bring them to the table. Obviously Ukraine has to be there because that's their country. And Russia has to be at that table," Rubio said.

Responding to the above information, the Kremlin on March 6 stated that US Secretary of State Rubio's view that the Ukraine conflict is a proxy war is consistent with Russian President Vladimir Putin's assessment.

"We can and want to agree with this assessment. That's true. We have said many times that this is really a conflict between Russia and Western countries, and the leader is the United States," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"The US is not a friendly country for us in that situation. However, at present, we are making efforts to restore and improve bilateral relations," TASS news agency quoted Mr. Peskov's statement on March 6.

On the same day, US Special Envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg confirmed the implications of the US decision to stop sharing intelligence with Ukraine. However, Mr. Kellogg made it clear that it was one of the reasons why US President Donald Trump made the decision to let the Ukrainian government realize how serious the US was about ending the conflict, according to The Guardian .

"It's not over, it's just on hold," Kellogg also stressed, adding that Ukraine should seriously consider making a mineral deal with the United States a top priority.

Europe meets to discuss Ukraine

At a summit in Brussels (Belgium) on March 6, European leaders agreed to increase defense spending and reaffirm support for Ukraine.

Accordingly, the European Commission (EC) announced the ReArm Europe plan to mobilize up to 860 billion USD for European defense, including supporting member states with loans worth 162 billion USD to buy priority military equipment. Most of the increased defense spending will have to come from national budgets, according to Reuters.

“Europe is facing a clear and present danger, so the continent must be able to defend itself,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “This budget provides more financial space for member states to spend on military spending and enables joint procurement at European level. And it also benefits Ukraine,” she said.

Mr Zelensky did not apologize but accepted Mr Trump's 'strong leadership'

European Council President Antonio Costa affirmed: "We are here to protect Ukraine."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also traveled to Brussels for the summit, where he thanked European leaders for their strong support for his country.

Also at the meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron said his country was ready to discuss extending the "Paris nuclear umbrella" to its European allies. European countries reacted in a mixed way to the statement. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that "such a nuclear umbrella would serve as a truly serious deterrent to Russia." Meanwhile, Poland said President Macron's idea was worth discussing, while Germany emphasized the participation of the United States.

The Kremlin called Macron's speech confrontational and said the French leader wanted to prolong the war in Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the speech "a threat" to Russia. Lavrov also rejected the European idea of sending a peacekeeping force from NATO member states to Ukraine.

Türkiye ready to send troops to Ukraine

Turkey, which has the second largest army in NATO after the United States, could contribute to a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, Reuters reported on March 6, citing a source from the Turkish Defense Ministry.

“The issue of contributions to the mission will be considered if deemed necessary to establish stability and peace in the region, and will be evaluated together with all relevant parties,” the source said.

The source said discussions on the deployment of Turkish troops were still conceptual and no concrete decisions had been made. According to the source, Türkiye could deploy troops if Russia and Ukraine declared a ceasefire and the initial deployment in Kyiv should include non-combat units to monitor the implementation of the peace.
