Community communication teams are not only a bridge to convey information but also an important tool in changing people's "thinking and working habits", creating opportunities for women and children to be protected and actively participate in social activities. In Thach Kiet commune, Tan Son district, the model of Community Communication Teams has shown many positive effects.
Ms. Ha Thi Thu Hue is one of the 8 members of the Chieng Community Media Team, Thach Kiet Commune. As a Muong, born and raised in Tan Son, since childhood she was taught by her grandparents and parents that women must be diligent, hard-working, take care of the family, do farm work, cook... Muong women rarely participate in important family and clan matters, and rarely go to school.

Ms. Hue said: “Since joining the Community Communications Team, through the activities, I have heard practical content, helping me change my awareness about gender equality, marriage and family law, child marriage law, and urgent issues for women and children.
Since the establishment of the Community Communications Team, I have seen a clear change in people's awareness, especially women. They realize that in addition to taking care of their families, women can also participate in community work and develop their careers. Programs on health, child protection, women and community development have helped raise awareness and motivate more women to participate in activities."
To implement Project 8, Thach Kiet commune, Tan Son district established the first Community Communication Team model consisting of 8 members in 2023 in Chieng area with the participation of residential area heads, party cell secretaries, prestigious people, etc. to raise the voices of women and girls in the community.
The propaganda sessions have contributed to changing the thinking and awareness of people in the commune, especially women.
In 2024, Thach Kiet commune will establish 3 more communication teams (each team consists of 10 members) in the areas: Dung 1, Dung 2, Minh Nga. Currently, the commune has a total of 4 community communication teams with 38 members participating with many combined measures to specify the tasks, targets, and solutions to implement the Project.
Through propaganda measures to ensure the voice and real participation of women and children in socio-economic development activities of the community. Support women to participate in leadership in the political system, ensure the voice and role of women in socio-economic issues at the local level such as: participating in people's meetings, meeting voters, contributing ideas to build the political system, ... help them change "thinking, working methods" in the community, gradually eliminate gender stereotypes and harmful customs, promote the goal of gender equality and sustainable development for women and children.
Ms. Ha Thi Thu Thao - President of the Women's Union of Thach Kiet commune said: "To effectively implement Project 8, the Women's Union of Thach Kiet commune discussed and agreed with each Community Communication Group to choose the form of support as a mobile loudspeaker so that the Community Communication Group can serve propaganda activities effectively. The groups also participated in training courses on communication skills and methods of writing news, media articles, building a communication network on digital platforms, etc.
Community media teams play an important role in changing people's "thinking and ways of doing things".
The goal is for 100% of Community Communications Teams to use social media to share and update information. Through communication methods, the teams will carry out propaganda campaigns to eliminate gender stereotypes and build a safe living environment for women and children.
The propaganda sessions have contributed to changing the thinking and awareness of the people in the commune, especially women. They know how to take control of their lives, actively participate in developing the family economy, go to vocational training, improve their self-worth, and create a voice in the family and society.
Up to now, Tan Son district has established 68 community communication teams in 68 villages and communes, with 138 members participating. The district Women's Union has actively carried out propaganda work with 86 propaganda sessions, with the participation of women's union officials at all levels, on family, women and children; 8 training conferences guiding the establishment and operation of communication teams with more than 569 participants; 5 communication campaigns with 28 communication sessions on gender prejudice, gender stereotypes, changing thinking and working methods, contributing to gradually eliminating bad customs in the locality, attracting more than 15,000 members, women and people to participate.
The Women's Union of Thach Kiet commune cooperates with the Health Station of Thach Kiet commune to propagate and mobilize ethnic minority women to give birth safely.
Ms. Dinh Thi Thu Hien - President of the Women's Union of Tan Son district shared: "Although facing many difficulties in propaganda work such as: Limited awareness, geographical conditions, we still define clear goals, choose members to participate in the project model who are prestigious, enthusiastic, responsible. In particular, they are people who understand the locality, are fluent in the ethnic language, and the customs of the community, this helps to improve the effectiveness of the project's propaganda work".
The achievements of the Community Communication Team in Thach Kiet commune are the goals and targets of Project 8 on "Implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children" under the National Target Program on Socio-economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2025 period. The initial results show positive signs in changing the awareness of the people of Thach Kiet commune in particular and in Tan Son district in general in changing and moving towards eliminating cultural practices that are harmful to women and children.
