Malaysia's New Straits Times commented on the June FIFA rankings: "Malaysia rose one place from last month to 137th in the world. This is the best ranking the Malaysian team has had in the past 17 years, since the team ranked 127th in May 2006."
The New Straits Times added: "Malaysia picked up another 9.44 points from two international friendlies this month, beating Solomon Islands 4-1 and Papua New Guinea 10-0. South Korean coach Kim Pan Gon's side now have a total of 1,091.57 points."
Among the Southeast Asian teams, Indonesia dropped in the rankings, despite having just played against the world's number one team, Argentina. The New Straits Times wrote: "Indonesia dropped one place from themselves, to 150th in the world. In Southeast Asia, the Vietnamese team leads with a ranking of 95, followed by Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia."
Also according to Malaysia's leading English daily, the mission of coach Kim Pan Gon's team is to join the world's top 130 by the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's Indo Sport clearly stated the reason why the archipelago team was relegated: "Indonesia has officially been relegated, even below lesser-known teams. The reason comes from Indonesia losing to Argentina in the FIFA Days series in June."
Indo Sport wrote: "The team from the archipelago lost 0-2 to the team from the land of Tango. This is a historic match for Indonesia, but the defeat to Argentina still makes Indonesia currently ranked lower than the Hong Kong team (China).
The Hong Kong team (China) currently has 1049.74 points (ranked 149), while Indonesia has 1047.46 points.
The loss to Argentina cost Indonesia 0.45 points. The 0-0 draw with Palestine a few days earlier only earned Indonesia 1.32 points.
