(Fatherland) - The class teaching folk sculpture and performance in the grave-abandoning ceremony contributes to preserving, transmitting, conserving and promoting the typical intangible cultural values ​​of the Co Tu people.


On the morning of November 29, in Nam Dong district (Thua Thien Hue province), the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts in Hue in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Information of Nam Dong district opened a class teaching the art of sculpture and folk performing arts in the grave-abandoning ceremony of the Co Tu people. This is an activity under the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development of Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period, phase 1 from 2021-2025.

Over the past two years, the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies has been one of the scientific research agencies assigned by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to implement topics under Project 6 in localities with ethnic minorities in the Northwest, Central Highlands and Central mountainous regions. In the Central mountainous region, in 2024, the Institute selected the Co Tu ethnic group in Thua Thien Hue province to establish and implement the project "Research, restoration, preservation and promotion of the grave abandonment ceremony of the Co Tu people in Doi village, Thuong Lo commune, Nam Dong district".

According to the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts in Hue, the grave abandonment ceremony is a very important ritual in the life cycle of a person, contributing to creating the unique cultural identity values ​​of the Co Tu people in the picture of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands as well as the whole country.

The training class was held on this occasion with the aim of restoring, preserving and transmitting techniques of sculpture, techniques of carving decorative patterns on tombs; performing arts of dances, folk songs, musical instruments associated with the practice of grave abandonment rituals. tradition of the Co Tu people.

Accordingly, at the training sessions, the village elders and prestigious Co Tu artisans will directly teach and instruct the younger generation of students, who are members of the village communities in Nam Dong, about the unique folk art heritage of their people. After the training session, the artisans, village elders and students of the training session will be the core players in creating vitality for the model of "Preserving the traditional village of the Co Tu ethnic group" being built in Doi village, Thuong Lo commune, Nam Dong district.

The Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts in Hue said that in the current context, this teaching class is very important, because many heritages are changing rapidly, many traditional arts are fading away in the face of strong development trends in many areas of life.

This is considered a specific solution, a practical action to contribute to preserving, transmitting, conserving and promoting folk sculpture and performance art, one of the typical intangible cultural values ​​of the Co Tu people.
