Dang Tran Con High School (Hue City)
On March 27, the Department of Education and Training of Thua Thien Hue province said it had asked the school board to explain after receiving information about the incident.
Have to scrape moss around the school if not going to camp?
Previously, Dang Tran Con High School announced that it would organize a camping festival to celebrate the founding anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union on March 26 at the Ve Nguon tourist area (Huong Ho ward, Hue city) on March 28 and 29.
This is a tourist resort that charges an entrance fee and each participating student is required to pay 350,000 VND, including 180,000 VND for entrance fee and 170,000 VND for meals for 2 days.
The whole school had 920 students registered to attend the camp and about 100 students did not attend.
Recently, the school board announced that teachers and students who do not participate in the camping festival, Phu Dong sports festival and national defense sports festival (these two activities were organized previously) must stay at school to do labor.
Specifically, the teachers and students must scrape off the moss on the fence around the school and then use brooms to clean it up. This work must be done on March 28 and 29. Any areas that are not clean will have to be compensated for by students on another day.
The school also requires homeroom teachers to inform parents of students who do not participate in the camp about this labor and consider it an "educational activity" of the school.
This announcement made many parents angry because they thought the school "discriminated" against students, creating an unfair educational environment.
"Forcing students who do not attend the camp to do labor to scrape moss is no different from an act of punishing students," an angry parent told Tuoi Tre Online .
What do education leaders say?
Tuoi Tre Online has contacted Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hien - principal of Dang Tran Con High School - many times by phone but could not get through.
Mr. Nguyen Tan - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Thua Thien Hue province - said that after receiving the feedback, the department asked the board of directors of Dang Tran Con High School to explain.
After reviewing, Mr. Tan said that Dang Tran Con High School's organization of a camping festival at the Ve Nguon tourist area and the announcement that students and teachers who did not participate in the camp had to go to work was unscientific and inconsistent with educational goals.
"Organizing such a plan can easily give rise to sensitive thoughts in students and parents. The Department has asked the school to self-examine, criticize and request the principal to seriously learn from experience in management, building and implementing educational plans," said Mr. Tan.
According to Mr. Tan, the department also requested the school to change the above camping and labor plan accordingly, ensuring the organization of general educational activities of the school. At the same time, the department also reminded and directed all educational institutions in the province to learn from this experience.
