This morning (October 9), Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda Department Nguyen Trong Nghia attended the opening ceremony of the new school year 2024-2025 at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Trong Nghia said that since its establishment in 1956, under the name of the Polytechnic Vocational University, over nearly 70 years, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has gradually affirmed its position and reputation, as the cradle of training high-quality science and technology human resources.

Over the past 70 years, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has trained over 200,000 engineers; 17,000 masters; nearly 1,200 doctors. Many technical universities across the country have been formed and developed as they are today thanks to the important contributions of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

“The number of staff and lecturers with doctoral and science doctoral degrees at the school is 74%, the highest rate among higher education institutions in the country, including nearly 300 professors and associate professors. This is the most important resource, potential, advantage and motivation that needs to be nurtured, promoted, exploited and used effectively,” said the Head of the Central Propaganda Department.

According to the Head of the Central Propaganda Department, in the QS (UK) university rankings in 2023, Hanoi University of Science and Technology ranked 248th among the best universities in Asia; and 54th among the best universities in Southeast Asia.

He emphasized the need for Hanoi University of Science and Technology to aim to become a leading university in Asia; a research, innovative, and comprehensively autonomous university; and an excellent center of technological innovation in the region.

To do this, according to the Head of the Central Propaganda Department, central and local departments, ministries, and branches need to coordinate to help build Hanoi University of Science and Technology and a number of key universities to soon become regional and international universities; at the same time, remove barriers and bottlenecks in mechanisms and policies, creating conditions for universities to develop to their full potential, especially the issue of university autonomy and increasing the state budget for higher education development.

Sharing at the ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Huynh Quyet Thang, Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that the past school year marked the first year the school performed its role as a university. Hanoi University of Science and Technology has completed the restructuring of its organizational model, converting to a university model, with 40 affiliated/directly affiliated units. The number of administrative units has been streamlined and reduced by 25% compared to before the restructuring.

In the period 2030-2035, the Party and the State have assigned the task to Hanoi University of Science and Technology to have a breakthrough and outstanding development to be among the top universities in Asia. “This is both an opportunity and a big challenge,” said Mr. Thang.

According to him, the school has completed the "Project to develop Hanoi University of Science and Technology into the group of leading universities in Asia" and submitted it to the Ministry of Education and Training to seek opinions from relevant ministries, branches and localities and is expected to submit it to the Prime Minister in November 2024.

Hanoi Medical University entered the world university rankings for the first time . Nine Vietnamese universities have just entered the world university rankings in 2025 of THE, including some new names such as Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Hanoi Medical University, and Ho Chi Minh City Open University.
