China and Japan have agreed on a long-term mechanism that would allow Beijing to monitor the discharge of treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea.

China and Japan have conducted several rounds of consultations and recently reached an agreement, Xinhua news agency said.
Accordingly, Tokyo will fulfill its obligations under international law, make maximum efforts to avoid negative impacts on the environment and human health, and continuously assess the impacts on the environment and marine ecosystems.
In addition, to address the concerns of China and other relevant parties, Japan welcomes the establishment of a long-term international monitoring arrangement within the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), covering all major stages of the discharge process.
The move is to ensure that stakeholders, including China, can participate in monitoring emissions, take independent samples and compare results between laboratories.
The two sides also agreed to continue constructive dialogue based on science and a high sense of responsibility to satisfactorily resolve concerns about the discharge of treated radioactive wastewater into the sea.
On the Chinese side, the country pledged that after significantly participating in international monitoring activities within the framework of the IAEA and other countries, as well as taking independent samples for testing, Beijing will adjust relevant measures based on scientific evidence and gradually allow the resumption of imports of Japanese seafood that meet quality standards and requirements.
