On Valentine's Day, red roses and chocolates are indispensable gifts. However, even though Valentine's Day 2024 is approaching, all kinds of roses and chocolates have been displayed but the market is still empty of buyers.
Fresh flowers are not much better. Flower shops in Hanoi open very early, displaying colorful and eye-catching bouquets, but are still waiting for customers. Flower prices range from 300,000 to 800,000 VND/bouquet, slightly higher than usual and much cheaper than the days before the Lunar New Year.
While most shops and services are still closed for Tet, flower shops have opened early, busy preparing fresh flowers for February 14.
However, many retailers said they did not dare to import many goods this year because they predicted that it would be difficult to attract customers. Because Valentine's Day falls on the fifth day of Tet, many people have not yet returned to Hanoi to work, and the Tet holiday mentality also makes customers reluctant to go shopping. In fact, the number of customers buying flowers for Valentine's Day has decreased sharply. "Before, customers bought a lot of flowers to celebrate Tet, so I'm afraid they are not interested in buying flowers now," said Ms. Thuy, owner of a flower shop on Kim Nguu Street (Hai Ba Trung District).
Chi Thao - owner of a gift shop on Xuan Thuy Street (Cau Giay, Hanoi) - also said: "Fearing weak purchasing power, I imported less goods in the hope of selling them all. Up to now, except for some candies and chocolates that are newly imported goods, the remaining wax roses and teddy bears are inventory from last season, I am selling them all."
Wax roses are sold for 250,000 - 500,000 VND/bunch. Every year this is a very hot gift but currently it is quite slow.
Bouquets of teddy bears of all kinds are sold for 120,000 - 200,000 VND/bouquet.
Young people really like Valentine gifts made from teddy bears of all sizes and shapes.
Balloons are also sold on Valentine's Day for 50,000 - 60,000 VND each.
Chocolate is also a gift that sellers hope will attract customers.
Prices for chocolates range from 150,000 - 300,000 VND/box. Many types of fresh chocolate, handmade chocolate, high-end chocolate, and imported chocolate will cost more, up to 500,000 - 1,000,000 VND/box.
Bear-shaped chocolate is one of the new products launched on the market for Valentine's Day this year, priced at 100,000 - 200,000 VND/box.
Deserted scene at many flower shops in Hanoi right before Valentine's Day, February 14.
Many stores are beautifully decorated, but sellers are worried about the lack of customers and weak purchasing power.
Even many flower shops are still closed, seemingly missing out on this opportunity to make money.
