Hanoi's 12th grade exam and survey schedule overlaps: Students worried

"Recently, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announced that it will organize a test for 12th graders across the city on April 5 and 6. However, most 12th graders registered to take the competency assessment test on April 6 and 7.

The two exam schedules overlapped on one day (April 6), putting many students at risk of not being able to participate in the competency assessment exam to use the results for university admission this year," a Hanoi parent whose child is in grade 12 told Tuoi Tre Online.

Two exam periods overlap, parents and students do not know in advance?

Mr. Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Testing Center - Hanoi National University, said that in 2024, Hanoi National University will have 6 rounds of competency assessment exams. The registration time for each exam session and the exam schedule for each round have been announced very early.

"The official exam schedule will be announced from January 10, 2024. In particular, the exam period as parents reported will be open for registration from February 18, 2024 and candidates are advised to avoid registering for the same exam schedule as the Department of Education and Training and the semester exam schedule. But I don't understand why there are still such overlapping schedules," said Mr. Thao.

According to a homeroom teacher at a high school in Cau Giay district (Hanoi), the survey schedule of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training was sent to schools after the Lunar New Year holiday.

"The document was signed before Tet, but perhaps due to the Tet holiday schedule, I was only informed about this schedule by the professional team on February 17. And it was not until after February 18 that the homeroom teacher informed the parents and students.

I remember when the department announced the assessment schedule, many parents said that their children had overlapping schedules for the assessment test. Many parents were worried about network congestion when registering for the assessment test, so when the portal opened, parents had to seize the opportunity to register immediately. Many people when registering for this test did not know when the department would organize the assessment test," the teacher confirmed the incident.

Several other high school principals in Hanoi also confirmed to Tuoi Tre Online that they received the survey schedule from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training after the Lunar New Year holiday. However, the information to parents and students may have been delayed by a few days compared to when the document was sent, leading to many parents and students not knowing the survey schedule when registering for the competency assessment exam in April 2024.

"The document was signed before Tet holiday, but the school only received it after Tet holiday. The notification to parents was also delayed by a few days due to the misunderstanding after the long holiday," a principal shared.

Exam and survey schedules cannot be adjusted.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Thao said: Currently, some parents and students have complained about this overlapping schedule. The Center announced that candidates can cancel the exam on April 6 and 7 (the second exam in 2024) to re-register. Because Hanoi National University has 4 more competency assessment exams, the last one is on June 1 and 2, 2024. But parents do not want to cancel, only request to adjust the exam schedule for April.

"We cannot adjust because the registration system, test sites set up digital standards and fixed number of seats," Mr. Thao affirmed.

The representative of the Department of Education and Training also said that the survey schedule cannot be postponed. The Hanoi survey was organized for 101,000 12th graders, a very large number. Because this is both a quality survey and a rehearsal for the 2024 high school graduation exam, the test questions and organization methods are applied as in the high school graduation exam.

Specifically, students will take 5 tests including: literature, math, foreign language, natural science (including physics, chemistry, biology) and social science (including history, geography, civics).

In these tests, only the literature subject will be in essay form; the remaining subjects will be in objective multiple choice form. The construction of the survey questions, security, printing and other preparations for this survey have all been completed.

However, according to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the survey results are not used as test scores or to evaluate students. The survey results are the basis for schools to adjust their teaching and review organization for students to ensure that they are suitable to their abilities and qualifications, thereby contributing to increasing the high school graduation rate.
