A farmer in Kien Binh commune, Kien Luong district, Kien Giang province, who grew rice to reduce emissions, was awarded VND43 million, equivalent to a reduction of 116 tons of CO2e. This farmer said that growing rice using an emission-reducing process is "much healthier" than the traditional method.
Growing rice to reduce emissions, a farmer in Kien Giang was rewarded with more than 40 million VND
Speaking to Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Chung Tan Em in Kien Binh commune, Kien Luong district, Kien Giang province said that in the summer-autumn crop of 2024, he planted 29 hectares of Japanese rice (DS1) according to the emission reduction rice model. Recently, he was awarded 43 million VND, equivalent to the reduction of 116 tons of CO2e emissions on the field, which he achieved for the first time.
Farmers in Hon Dat district (Kien Giang province) receive bonuses for growing rice to reduce emissions.
According to Mr. Tan Em, rice cultivation reduces emissions "much better" than the traditional way of doing things, everything is monitored and controlled by satellites. The most important thing is to pay attention to draining the fields as much as possible (according to the alternating wet and dry farming technique, still ensuring that the rice plants absorb nutrients well).
This method combined with the application of biological products will help the rice plant have many, deep roots, leading to healthy, sturdy rice plants, especially limiting lodging.
Mr. Tan Em said that he should have been rewarded with more money, but because it rained a lot during the farming process, the amount of emissions was low.
"I drain water from my fields regularly, but there have been too many storms, so the emission reduction is not as expected," Mr. Tan Em regretted.
Rewarding rice farmers for reducing emissions.
This farmer emphasized that he will continue to follow the emission-reducing rice growing model. With this method, in addition to the income from growing rice after more than 4 months of care, he also receives money from emission reduction.
In addition to Mr. Tan Em, farmer Le Huynh Huu Nghi in Kien Luong district received more than 21 million VND from growing rice to reduce emissions, with a total area of more than 11 hectares.
Along with the two farmers above, six households in Hon Dat district (Kien Giang province) also received from 2.6 to 7.2 million VND in bonuses from growing emission-reducing rice with a sowing area of 1.9 to 4.8 hectares.
Farmers are rewarded based on their emissions reduction results.
According to Dan Viet reporters, the above households participated in growing rice to reduce emissions according to the process of Net Zero Carbon Company in collaboration with BSB Nanotech Company, piloting on a total area of 71 hectares in Hon Dat and Kien Luong districts of Kien Giang province.
Mr. Tran Minh Tien - General Director of Net Zero Carbon Company (left) awards rice farmers for reducing emissions.
Participating in the model, farmers use Japanese rice variety (DS1) with a growth period of 125 days and comply with the company's production process, such as reducing seeds, pesticides, and especially following the alternating wet and dry water regime.
Thanks to this process, in terms of investment costs, the model only costs 28.5 million VND/ha, 10.38% lower than the regional average cost of 31.8 million VND.
Accordingly, the rice yield of participating people reached an average of 7.6 tons/ha, 7% higher than the regional average of 7.1 tons. In particular, some households achieved 8.4 tons/ha.
After the harvest, in addition to the profits from selling rice, farmers are rewarded by the company for reducing emissions ($15/ton CO2e).
With the total area following the above-mentioned emission reduction rice model, helping to reduce 287 tons of CO2e (average 4.88 tons/ha), farmers were rewarded a total of nearly 150 million VND.
Regarding the above issue, speaking with Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Tran Minh Tien - General Director of Net Zero Carbon Company said that the company has a team of good engineers to guide rice farmers to reduce emissions according to specific processes.
This process follows the recommendations and requirements of the International Rice Research Institute IRRI, UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change).
In Kien Giang, the model has achieved many successes in helping farmers reduce costs, increase productivity, and most importantly, farmers can feel the difference in the rice plants (healthier, more grains per flower) compared to before. In addition, farmers also reduced 30% of pesticides (to treat fungi and bacteria).
During rice production, the company has satellites to monitor and measure emissions. After harvest, the company will compile and report the results of emission reduction and reward farmers with money corresponding to the amount of CO2e reduced.
Mr. Tran Minh Tien - General Director of Net Zero Carbon Company emphasized that the company is very confident in its process and guarantees farmers that rice yield will not be lower than the district average, if lower, it will be compensated according to market price. Since then, people have been assured to follow and have achieved the expected results.
In addition to Kien Giang, Mr. Tien's model is also deployed in Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Dak Lak, Binh Thuan, An Giang,...
