A few years ago, the movement of growing ginger for sale began to develop in some upper communes of Yen Son district (Tuyen Quang province), of which Kien Thiet and Trung Truc communes are typical. Ginger tubers are purchased by traders mainly for export to China.

Ginger is an indispensable spice and medicinal plant for people, especially ethnic minorities living in the highlands. They often grow ginger around their home gardens, then spread it up to the high mountains.

Seeing the ginger plants growing well, people brought the excess to the market to sell. A few years ago, the movement of growing ginger for sale began to develop in some upper communes of Yen Son district, of which the most typical are Kien Thiet and Trung Truc communes.

Ginger is mainly purchased by traders for export to China. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, ginger cannot be exported, so people reduce the area. Over the past year, ginger has shown signs of recovery thanks to the increase in ginger prices.

Mr. Tran Huu Hung, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Yen Son district, said that currently the area of ginger in the whole district is over 64 hectares, concentrated in Kien Thiet commune with nearly 23 hectares, Trung Truc with 19.5 hectares, Trung Minh with 6.3 hectares, and Quy Quan with 6 hectares.

Ginger is purchased by traders at a price of 1,200 - 1,500 thousand VND/kg, contributing to increasing income and improving people's lives.

To have a direction for ginger plants, as well as to find a stable output for the product, on October 5, the People's Committee of Tuyen Quang province allowed the Institute of Biotechnology and Food Technology - University of Agriculture and Forestry - Thai Nguyen University and Kim-Sonaki Korea Co., Ltd. to coordinate with the People's Committee of Yen Son district and the Farmers' Association of Yen district to have a direct working session in Kien Thiet commune to learn about the raw material area and quality of ginger. Currently, Kim-Sonaki Korea Co., Ltd. is in need of importing 5,000 tons of good ginger for processing.

The delegation visited and evaluated the ginger growing area in Nam Bo village, Kien Thiet commune, Yen Son district, Tuyen Quang province.

The delegation visited the ginger gardens stretching along the mountain slopes of Kien Thiet commune, which are about to be harvested. Mr. Sung Seo Ho, a Mong ethnic, from Nam Bo village, affirmed that 1 hectare of ginger, with an estimated annual harvest of 10 tons of tubers, helps his family escape poverty and become rich. According to him, ginger is easy to grow, care for, harvest and preserve, and is suitable for the local climate and soil.

Ginger always gives good yield and quality. When the ginger harvest season comes, traders from all over come to buy, the price sometimes goes up, sometimes goes down. Ginger growers in the area really want a company to buy, guarantee consumption, and stabilize the price of the product.

Dr. Pham Bang Phuong, Lecturer at the Institute of Biotechnology and Food Technology - Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr. Kim IL Hwan, Director of Kim-Sonaki Co., Ltd., Korea, took samples of ginger roots grown by households for analysis and evaluation.

Sensory-wise, the group found the ginger to be large and full of roots, and very hot and spicy when tested. Through detailed analysis of ginger samples from the Institute of Biotechnology and Food Technology - University of Agriculture and Forestry - Thai Nguyen University, the biochemical components all met and exceeded the requirements.

The delegation concluded that Kien Thiet and the communes of Yen Son district could expand the area into a large specialized area if the company would purchase the products. Through field inspection and sample analysis, the Korean side was very satisfied with the quality as well as the farming methods of the people, which met the requirements of Kim-Sonaki Co., Ltd.
