Having been involved for many years in developing medicinal plants according to the forest garden economic model, combined with population dispersal, Mr. Tran Van Ta, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tay Giang district, said that medicinal plants such as Codonopsis pilosula and Purple Morinda officinalis are completely adapted to the soil conditions, habits, and farming skills of the people.

After more than 5 years of mobilizing and supporting capital and techniques for people to renovate their home gardens and forest gardens, Tay Giang district has planted over 1,000 hectares of medicinal plants, mainly ginseng and purple Morinda officinalis.

Although the output has not been statistically calculated, this is considered a key crop in creating sustainable livelihoods for local people.

"The district's policy in the coming years is to prioritize land allocation for clean agricultural development, medicinal plant cultivation in a chain-linked, concentrated, specialized direction, suitable for land and climate conditions, gradually forming production areas, especially in depopulated areas in border areas.

In addition to capital from national target programs, the district continues to attract investment capital from enterprises to develop medicinal plants in the direction of linking from investing in plants and breeds to purchasing, processing, building brands, creating a stable source of income for people" - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tay Giang district said.

Talking about the potential of medicinal plants, Mr. Bhling Mia, Secretary of Tay Giang District Party Committee, said that Codonopsis pilosula and purple Morinda officinalis along with some other medicinal plants are indigenous plants, used by local people since ancient times.

These plants have been developed strongly in the past ten years when market demand increased and have become the main crop in the process of implementing the policy of population dispersion and gardening for people, especially people in border areas.

According to Mr. Bhling Mia, out of 123 village and residential areas with a total resettlement area of over 374 hectares, the district has arranged for more than 5,600 ethnic minority households to resettle. More than half of the households have been supported with capital, food and techniques to develop forest garden economy according to the model of raising livestock and growing medicinal plants.

Tay Giang has 10 communes, including 8 border communes adjacent to Ka Lum and Dac Chung districts, Sekong province of Laos.

Currently, 8 border communes have car roads to the center, 62/63 villages have car roads, the forest coverage rate is nearly 73%. This is a favorable condition for Tay Giang to effectively implement the population dispersal program, establish forest gardens, develop livestock, and grow medicinal herbs under the forest canopy for the people.

In the past time, from many capital sources under the National Target Program on sustainable poverty reduction, new rural construction, and provincial capital on incentive mechanisms for conservation and development of some medicinal plants, in the period of 2016 - 2020, Tay Giang district (Quang Nam province) has supported people to develop medicinal plants on a total area of nearly 1,475 hectares.

In addition, after the Government issued Resolution No. 12/NQCP (implementing Resolution No. 88/2019/QH 14 of the National Assembly), approving the Master Plan for socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas for the period 2021 - 2030, Tay Giang district has deployed the "Model of medicinal plants linked to the value chain associated with product consumption" in the area of Ga Ry and Ch'Om communes.

In Ch'Om commune alone, 100% of households participate in growing ginseng with a total area of more than 200 hectares, of which Achoong village accounts for nearly half.

The project of linking to develop medicinal plant growing areas helps ethnic minorities have a source of income and improve their lives, so many households are excited to participate. Along with that, the Ch'Om Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative supports product consumption, helping hundreds of households have a stable income from Codonopsis pilosula, about 150 - 200 million VND.

Tay Giang will continue to effectively combine capital from national target programs and other investment capital to develop infrastructure; focus on planning and arranging residents along the border, associated with developing forest garden economy, expanding medicinal plant areas, creating sustainable livelihoods, improving the material and spiritual life of people...
