Sputnik news agency reported that on September 13, the Russian Federal Security Council announced that its head Sergei Shoigu visited North Korea within the framework of strategic dialogue between the two countries.
Russian and North Korean officials discussed a range of bilateral and international issues. Afterwards, Russian Security Council Secretary Shoigu met with Chairman Kim Jong Un.
The meeting took place in an atmosphere of special trust and friendship and will help implement the agreements reached during President Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang last June, the statement said.
Meanwhile, South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted the country's National Intelligence Service (NIS) as saying that they are closely monitoring the possibility of North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui visiting Russia.
The NIS announcement came amid rumors that Choe Son-hui is expected to visit Russia to attend the 4th Eurasian Women's Forum to be held from September 18-20 in St. Petersburg.
Ms. Choe is also rumored to be traveling to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly meetings, scheduled to open on September 24.
The North Korean diplomat last visited Russia in January and met with host President Vladimir Putin.
Recently, Pyongyang and Moscow have increased cooperation in many fields, including the military, as well as increased delegation exchanges.
In June, Chairman Kim Jong Un and President Putin held a summit in Pyongyang, during which the two sides signed a new partnership treaty that includes a mutual defense clause.
