According to the recall notice from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the front passenger airbag module may not have been securely attached to the underside of the dashboard, due to the plastic part of the dashboard not meeting specifications.
That problem could reduce the ability of the airbag to deploy, and pieces of the dashboard could detach in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.
This recall affects five 2024 BMW X5 sDrive40i and X5 xDrive40i vehicles manufactured on January 29 and three 2024 X7 xDrive40i vehicles also manufactured on January 29.
BMW acknowledged the issue on January 27, when a supplier found that the panel did not meet quality standards. The composition of the plastic used to manufacture the panel was later tested and found to not meet quality standards.
BMW ordered a halt in deliveries at a US plant in February and then decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
BMW has not received any customer complaints, inquiries or warranty claims related to this issue. BMW has also not recorded any incidents or injuries caused by this issue.
BMW has asked dealers to replace the dashboard for free in the eight BMW X5 and X7 vehicles above.
