Artificial intelligence drives innovation in teaching and learning methods

NDO - On April 16, in Hanoi, the National Economics University held a seminar with the theme "Innovation in teaching and learning methods to adapt to the development of technology and artificial intelligence".

Sharing at the discussion, Professor, Dr. Pham Hong Chuong, Director of the National Economics University, said that although we are talking a lot about the digital world, the ultimate destination of humans is still the real world. The digital world only plays a supporting role, aiming to make the real world richer and better. Similarly, between digital space and real space, what humans ultimately aim for is still the value and experience in real space.

Therefore, in recent years, the National Economics University has clearly defined its stance of not prohibiting students from using AI or tools like ChatGPT. The important thing is not whether or not to use them, but how students apply these tools effectively and for the right purposes.

Professor, Dr. Pham Hong Chuong believes that for students, the core requirement is to be able to master technology and situations. During the learning process, tools like ChatGPT can help provide answers, however, it is important that students understand, analyze and apply those answers.

“Mastery” means that students must know how to pose problems, understand the thinking process and solve problems. At that time, tools only play a supporting role in providing solutions. The role of the lecturer is to equip students with basic knowledge and appropriate thinking methods, thereby helping them to understand deeply and use technology proactively and effectively.

In the digital age, memorization and synthesis of content can be fully supported by artificial intelligence. However, the requirements for the new generation of students are not only limited to receiving information, but also the ability to pose problems, understand methods, develop critical and creative thinking.

AI will be a tool, a companion in the learning and research process, but the key factor is still the mindset and knowledge base of each individual - to understand, evaluate and master what technology brings.

National Economics University is gradually implementing a training model based on the Lecture/Seminar method. With this model, about half of the duration of each course allows students to choose to attend class or not, depending on their needs. Lectures in the smart classroom will be fully recorded, allowing students to follow online or save them to study at any time. The rest of the course will take place in the form of a Seminar - where students will interact with each other, discuss with lecturers and solve practical situations, application exercises or specific tasks.

Professor, Dr. Pham Hong Chuong expressed his hope that with the Lecture/Seminar training method combined with support tools such as ChatGPT and many other application software, the learning process of students will become more convenient, shortening the time to absorb but still accessing a large amount of knowledge, at the same time better mastering modern technologies. This is also the training goal of the school in the context of digital transformation and the explosion of artificial intelligence today.

In the context of science and technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), which is having a profound impact on all aspects of social life, the National Economics University aims to promote its internal capabilities while promoting the application of technological achievements in teaching and training activities. The school is gradually innovating from building curriculum, student assessment methods, to integrating AI into lectures to increase liveliness, improve the effectiveness of knowledge transfer and inspire students to learn.

Meanwhile, Vice President of the National Economics University, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong said that in recent years, the National Economics University has undergone strong changes and transformations in both its organizational structure and the improvement of training quality. The school aims to promote its internal capabilities, while promoting the application of technological achievements in teaching and training activities; it is gradually innovating from the development of curriculum, student assessment methods, to the integration of AI into lectures to increase liveliness, improve the effectiveness of knowledge transfer and inspire students to learn.

At the seminar, delegates gave many opinions related to innovating teaching and learning methods to adapt to the development of technology and artificial intelligence.

Principal of the School of Technology, National Economics University, Dr. Nguyen Quang Huy said: Applying AI to education will help lecturers improve the quality of teaching through creating outlines and lectures. At the same time, automating repetitive tasks such as grading papers, checking grammar, and spending time on more valuable tasks such as guiding students and innovating teaching methods. AI supports lecturers in self-development, self-learning new knowledge, new technology, and new skills. AI also supports lecturers in scientific research because it will help automate the following stages: searching for documents, citing, and automatically summarizing to quickly understand the core content; helping to write effective academic articles: suggesting article structures, standardizing according to international academic standards, checking spelling, grammar, and natural expression.

For students, AI helps optimize learning time and efficiency. When used properly, students learn how to ask questions, verify information, and think critically. AI can also suggest counterarguments to an argument, help students look at problems from multiple perspectives, and support foreign language and skill learning.

The seminar was organized to create a space for exchange and discussion between experts and lecturers about innovative trends in teaching and learning methods in the digital transformation period, especially in the context of artificial intelligence and technology having a profound impact on the education sector.

This is also an opportunity to share practical experiences and propose solutions to apply technology and AI to teaching activities, aiming to improve training efficiency, promote personalization in the learning process and develop creative thinking for learners. The event attracted the attention and active participation of many staff, lecturers, students and experts in the fields of education and technology.
