Reducing the burden on the wife of a Gac Ma veteran
During the battle to protect Gac Ma on March 14, 1988, veteran Duong Van Dung and eight comrades were captured and imprisoned in China for nearly four years.
It was not until 1991 that he was able to return to live in Da Nang. In 2017, he passed away, leaving behind his wife and two children after a long battle with cancer.
Awarding 120 million VND scholarship to Gac Ma veteran's daughter in Da Nang
After her husband passed away, the burden of raising two children fell on Mrs. Tran Thi Loi, Mr. Dung's wife, to carry out her vegetable stall. However, keeping her promise to her husband before he passed away, no matter how hard it was, Mrs. Loi still raised her two children to pursue their education over the years.
Mrs. Loi’s eldest daughter has now graduated and is a kindergarten teacher at a private school. The youngest daughter, Duong Thi My Linh, is a student majoring in tourism and travel services management at Duy Tan University.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Phu, vice principal of Duy Tan University, said that on March 12, while abroad, the school's founder learned about the family situation of student Duong Thi My Linh, the daughter of a Gac Ma veteran.
Knowing that Linh will soon have a one-semester program to study in Korea, but she is hesitant because she is worried that her mother cannot afford the cost, the school board decided to award her a full scholarship worth 120 million VND so that she can have more conditions to study.
"The school's founder wanted to give this gift so that Linh could study with peace of mind. This is also an opportunity to show gratitude to those who have devoted their sweat, effort, and blood to protect the sacred territory of the Fatherland," said Mr. Phu.

Full of soldier's love
On March 14, Mrs. Tran Thi Loi's family received as much attention and encouragement as when her husband was alive.
Mrs. Loi said that after Mr. Dung was released by China a few years later, he returned to his hometown to start a family. During that time, he made a living as a construction worker around Da Nang, while she sold vegetables at the market.
Although life was not full, it was always filled with laughter because all three children were well-behaved and good at studying. However, a few years ago, tragedy struck the family when the only son died in an accident, and then Mr. Dung was diagnosed with cancer and had to be hospitalized continuously.
Having to endure the pain at the same time, there were times when Mrs. Loi thought she could not bear it. But fortunately, at those times, her family always had veteran friends to encourage and share.
Every year on March 14, her family receives attention from the government, police, army...
"Especially Mr. Dung's Gac Ma comrades. The liaison team members, those with good circumstances encouraged those in difficult circumstances.
I remember when my husband was still in the hospital, his comrades from all over the country came to Da Nang to organize a surprise meeting for him in the hospital, which was very touching. Before he passed away, he was at peace because he had lived and fully felt the meaning of a soldier's life," said Mrs. Loi.
