Controversy over Galatasaray's goal against Man Utd

Turkey British media said the referee broke the rules when he recognized Hakim Ziyech's goal to reduce the score to 1-2 in the match Galatasaray drew 3-3 with Man Utd.

The Moroccan midfielder took advantage of the gap in the wall created by his two teammates to take a free kick. The low kick surprised Andre Onana, causing the Man Utd goalkeeper to miss his shot.

However, many newspapers pointed out that Galatasaray's set-up violated the rules. Accordingly, because Man Utd sent four players to form a wall, Galatasaray players had to stand at least one meter away from the wall. In this situation, Mauro Icardi (number 9) stood close to the Man Utd wall before moving, creating space for Ziyech to finish there.

beIN SPORTS quoted the rule: "If there are at least three players in the wall, all attacking players must remain at least one metre away from the wall until the ball is put back into play. Galatasaray's goal should have been disallowed." The channel also measured the distance between Icardi and the nearest Man Utd player in the wall - Rasmus Hojlund - as just 61cm.

According to Manchester Evening News, if handled correctly, referee Jose Maria Sanchez should have penalized Icardi in this situation and awarded Man Utd an indirect free kick. However, the Spanish referee seemed to have forgotten the rules.

According to the Sun , the responsibility for detecting this error lies with Sanchez. UEFA regulations stipulate that VAR will check any game-changing situations, but only intervene if the referee has made a clear error.

At the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, Man Utd took an early 2-0 lead thanks to Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes. However, Ziyech's free-kick equalised 1-2 and gave Galatasaray hope of a comeback. However, Scott McTominay later helped the visitors restore their two-goal lead. Ziyech, who played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, continued to score from free-kicks. This time, his goal was assisted by a mistake from his former teammate Onana. Ziyech also assisted Muhammed Akturkoglu to score the third goal of the second half.

This draw leaves Man Utd at the bottom of Group A. They still have a chance to advance but cannot decide for themselves. Coach Ten Hag and his team need to beat Bayern in the final round, while also hoping for a draw in the match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
