Mong Cai pig farm of Van Thanh Phat Cooperative (Hai Yen ward, Mong Cai city) was granted the first organic certificate in Quang Ninh province.
For many years, Mong Cai pigs have become a famous OCOP product in Quang Ninh. This is a precious native pig breed but at one point was at risk of being lost due to crossbreeding with other pig breeds.
In the period of 2021 - 2025, the Department of Science and Technology of Quang Ninh province has coordinated with the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture to implement the project "Conserving the genetic resources of Mong Cai pigs in Quang Ninh province". The general goal of the project is to restore and develop the purebred Mong Cai pig herd by applying genetic technology, assisted reproductive technology and nutritional technology.

On an area of 3 hectares, Van Thanh Phat Cooperative (Hai Yen Ward, Mong Cai City) has built a model of raising organic Mong Cai pigs and producing quality-assured breeding animals to supply to the market.
Ms. Dang Thi Lien, Director of Van Thanh Phat Cooperative, said that the Cooperative is a pioneer in pig farming according to Japan's JAS (Japan Agricultural Standard) organic standards - one of the most stringent and internationally recognized standards for quality and sustainability. "We are committed to providing high-quality products while maintaining an organic farming model that has a positive impact on human health and the environment," Ms. Lien shared.
The Japanese JAS Organic standard is a comprehensive quality management system that covers animal care, organic feed, and natural pig farming methods. The cooperative strictly adheres to the requirements of this standard, ensuring that every step in the production chain meets the highest standards of quality and safety.
"The Mong Cai pigs of the cooperative only eat food grown within the farm, no outside food is brought in. The food includes vegetables and tubers such as cassava, corn, arrowroot and some fruits such as bananas, jackfruit, mango... combined with sea fish to create food that ensures nutrition and meets organic standards," Ms. Lien emphasized.
Currently, Van Thanh Phat Cooperative not only provides safe and quality food but also aims to maintain balance with the environment by not using chemicals and antibiotics in the pig farming process.

Ms. Chu Thi Thu Thuy, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Quang Ninh, said that Quang Ninh has a number of livestock breeds that can apply organic farming processes such as Mong Cai pigs and Tien Yen chickens. "Mong Cai pigs are a breed of livestock suitable for traditional farming methods, so they are suitable for organic farming. The organic Mong Cai pig farming model of Van Thanh Phat Cooperative is a premise for expanding organic farming models in the future," Ms. Thuy shared.
Each year, Van Thanh Phat Cooperative sells over 500 Mong Cai pigs, including 100 organic Mong Cai pigs. With a selling price of 250,000 VND/kg of organic pigs and 1.5 - 2 million VND/pig, Ms. Lien's Mong Cai pig farm earns hundreds of millions of VND.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Mong Cai City, said that the locality is focusing on building a chain linking Mong Cai pigs from breeding to raising commercial pigs, processing and consuming products.
Mong Cai City always supports businesses and cooperatives to participate in fairs and promote domestic and international trade. The city aims for Mong Cai pigs to be certified as 5-star OCOP products, becoming a strong agricultural product of the locality.
