At the 2023 Asian Cup, Vietnam is in Group D with Japan, Iraq and Indonesia. In the opening match, coach Philippe Troussier and his team will meet the number 1 candidate for this year's Asian championship - Japan.
This match will be held at 9:30 p.m. on January 14 (Vietnam time), at Al Thumama Stadium.
Al Thumama Stadium has a capacity of 44,400 seats. The stadium is inspired by the traditional Qatari taqiyah hat.
This is the venue for 6 group stage matches, a round of 16 match between France and Poland and the "earthquake" named Morocco when it "defeated" Portugal in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup.
At this year's Asian Cup, in addition to being the venue for the match between Vietnam and Japan, Al Thumama Stadium will also host matches between Lebanon vs China, South Korea vs Jordan, Japan vs Indonesia, a round of 16 match and a semi-final match.
Five days after the match against the “Samurai Blue”, Nguyen Filip and his teammates will meet the same region team Indonesia, also at 9:30 p.m. This match will take place at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium has a modest capacity of only 10,000 people. In addition to hosting the match between Vietnam and Indonesia (January 19), Abdullah bin Khalifa is also the venue for 5 other matches in the group stage and one match in the round of 16.
The Golden Star Warriors’ final group stage match, against Iraq, will take place at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on January 24. This is the venue for a total of six group stage matches, as well as one knockout match.
Earlier, on the morning of January 3, a representative of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) confirmed that two players Nguyen Tien Linh and Que Ngoc Hai could not continue to accompany the Vietnamese team in the training session to prepare for the 2024 Asian Cup.
This is very unfortunate but unavoidable because Tien Linh and Que Ngoc Hai are both injured and cannot recover before the continental tournament taking place in Qatar, from January 13 to February 11.
Coach Troussier allowed both players to return to their clubs on the afternoon of January 3 to continue treatment for their injuries. The French strategist hopes his players will return soon to prepare for the next major tournaments in 2024, the most recent of which is the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup taking place next March.
After returning Tien Linh and Que Ngoc Hai to their clubs, the Vietnamese team has 8 players who had to say goodbye due to injuries.
