On February 7, Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh Chau - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that he had sent an urgent document to units about strengthening the prevention and control of seasonal flu.

The Department of Health said that Vietnam's surveillance system is currently recording information about the seasonal flu outbreak in Japan.

According to data released (January 31, 2025) by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases of Japan, from September 2, 2024 to January 26, 2025, Japan recorded about 9.5 million cases of seasonal flu.

Of which, the last week of 2024 (from December 23 to 29, 2024) recorded more than 317,000 cases.

In Vietnam, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases is currently treating eight patients with the flu, one of whom is on ECMO (artificial heart-lung intervention - PV).

In the city, according to statistics and reports from the City Center for Disease Control and specialized pediatric and infectious disease hospitals, up to now, no abnormalities have been detected in the reception and treatment of flu patients.

However, at present, the weather is favorable for the spread of respiratory pathogens.

Therefore, the city proactively implemented measures to prevent and control the flu epidemic, not to cause panic or anxiety, but not to be subjective or negligent in the face of the epidemic's developments.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recommends that medical facilities continue to advise people coming for examination, treatment, or work at medical facilities to strictly wear masks within the premises of medical facilities.

At the same time, continue to strengthen the prevention of avian influenza transmission to humans.

The City Center for Disease Control needs to take the lead and coordinate with medical facilities, district and commune health centers, and Thu Duc City to monitor cases of influenza and suspected severe viral pneumonia (SVP) in the area.

In addition, strengthen information, communication and messaging activities so that people can proactively implement effective disease prevention measures.

Non-public medical examination and treatment facilities report cases or suspected cases of viral pneumonia and influenza to health stations, health centers, districts and Thu Duc City for timely implementation of epidemic prevention and control.

How do people prevent seasonal flu?

Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recommends that to proactively prevent seasonal flu, people need to take the following measures:

- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, preferably with a cloth or handkerchief or disposable tissue or your sleeve to reduce the spread of respiratory secretions.

- Pay attention, wear a mask in crowded places, on public transport; wash hands regularly with soap and clean water or hand sanitizer (especially after coughing or sneezing).

- Especially do not spit indiscriminately in public places; limit contact with people with flu or suspected cases when not necessary.

- Recommend getting a seasonal flu vaccine; practicing a healthy lifestyle; eating nutritious foods to prevent influenza virus infection; increasing physical activity to improve health.

When you have symptoms of cough, fever, runny nose, headache, fatigue, do not arbitrarily test or buy medicine to treat yourself at home, but contact a medical facility for timely advice, examination and treatment.

Recently, Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu passed away at the age of 48 after contracting seasonal flu and pneumonia in Japan. In Vietnam, seasonal flu is a fairly common disease, but many people are still subjective about this disease.
