In his nightly video address, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine had made progress in developing electronic weapons, “but there is still much work to do to counter Russian bombs”.
“Ukraine needs systems and tactics that will help protect its positions, cities and communities from these bombs. This is Russia’s main tool in its attacks,” he said.
Zelenskyy has long called for improved air defenses as Russia has stepped up attacks on Ukraine’s energy plants and other infrastructure. Earlier this month, Zelenskyy said Russia had used more than 3,200 guided bombs against Ukrainian targets in April, along with more than 300 missiles and about 300 Shahed drones.
Russia is increasingly using these bombs, which are guided to their target using a guidance system, have great destructive power and pose less risk to the crews operating them.
In his comments, Mr Zelenskyy added that four countries - Albania, Austria, Chile and Mozambique - had agreed to attend a "peace summit" in Switzerland in June with the aim of demanding that Russia agree to a peaceful settlement.
Mr Zelenskyy's peace plan calls for Russia to withdraw all its forces and restore Ukraine's 1991 borders.
Russia, which rejected the plan, refused to attend the meeting in June and considered any discussion of the conflict without its participation pointless.
