Such a move would pose a significant challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said.
Specifically, President Zelensky said: "If you (India) stop importing oil, Mr. Putin will face huge challenges. The impact of India's economic decisions on this ongoing military conflict".
Mr. Zelensky explained that billions of dollars in oil revenue are directly feeding President Putin's economy.
India overtook China to become the world’s biggest importer of Russian oil in July. The shift came as refiners in the world’s second-largest economy bought less oil as profit margins from fuel production fell.
India imported a record 2.07 million barrels of oil per day from Russia in July, up 4.2 percent from June and 12 percent from a year earlier, trade sources said.
In total, Moscow oil accounted for 44% of New Delhi's total oil imports last month.
Meanwhile, China imported only 1.76 million barrels of oil per day from Russia, according to the country's customs data. The reason is that fuel demand in this economy has decreased.
