Reuters quoted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as saying on the sidelines of the NATO-Ukraine Council that Kiev needs at least seven more Patriot air defense systems or long-range air defense systems to counter Russian airstrikes. Mr. Zelensky also wants allied countries to increase aid.

According to the Ukrainian President, military aid from the West is currently "very limited". He also mentioned that the US, UK and France have supported Israel in intercepting Iran's attack.

"I must say frankly that for Ukraine's defense, we need seven more Patriot air defense systems or similar, and this is the minimum number. Additional weapons systems will help change the situation," Mr. Zelensky emphasized.

Over the past few months, Russia has stepped up its long-range air strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and cities, increasing pressure on Kiev as Russian forces on the eastern front continue to expand their control.

Mr Zelensky said that this year alone Ukraine had been attacked by nearly 1,200 Russian missiles, more than 1,500 drones and 8,500 guided bombs.

The US-made Patriot system can shoot down aircraft, cruise missiles and short-range tactical ballistic missiles. Ukraine operates about 3-5 Patriot systems transferred by the US and some European countries.

However, the ammunition supply for Ukraine's air defense systems is running out, making Russian missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks more successful.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that immediately after the conference, the allies agreed to provide Ukraine with additional air defense systems.

"In addition to Patriot, there are other weapons that allies can provide, including the French SAMP/T system and many others. However, these systems cannot be delivered immediately," Mr. Stoltenberg added.

US military aid to Ukraine has been stalled for months in Congress, but the US House of Representatives is expected to vote on the funding bill today, April 20.
