(CLO) US President Donald Trump said he has spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping since taking office on January 20, but did not provide details about the content of the conversation.
In an interview broadcast on Fox News on February 10, when asked if he had been in contact with Mr. Xi since his inauguration, Mr. Trump replied: "Yes... I have spoken to him and also to his associates."

"We have a very good personal relationship," he also stressed. However, President Trump did not disclose the specific time of the call or the content discussed.
Last week, Mr. Trump said he was in no rush to speak with Mr. Xi to try to defuse a new trade war between the world’s two largest economies. The conversation between the two leaders is seen as crucial to the possibility of easing or delaying trade tariffs. The White House and China’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the interview.
Before his inauguration in January, Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi spoke by phone, discussing issues such as TikTok, trade and Taiwan. China recently imposed tariffs on some imports from the United States, after Mr. Trump announced an additional 10% tax on some products imported from China. Relations between Washington and Beijing have been tense for years, with disagreements over trade tariffs, cybersecurity, and more.
US-China trade tensions are showing signs of escalating, with the possibility that the two countries will continue to have economic retaliation against each other in the coming time. Experts say that any dialogue between Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi could directly affect global financial markets.
