(CLO) On January 10, the administration of outgoing President Joe Biden decided to extend the temporary protection from deportation program for about 900,000 immigrants from Ukraine, Venezuela, El Salvador and Sudan.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program for another 18 months, allowing these immigrants to not only avoid deportation but also continue to be granted work permits in the US.

Since taking office in 2021, President Biden has expanded TPS eligibility, which is available to people from countries facing natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other extreme events. TPS currently protects more than 1 million people from 17 countries.
In contrast, during his term from 2017–2021, Donald Trump attempted to end most TPS programs but was blocked by US courts. When he returns to the White House this January, Trump is expected to continue tightening immigration policies and seek to eliminate these protections.
While extending TPS is an important step, the Biden administration has yet to fully respond to demands from activists and some Democratic lawmakers to expand the program to new immigrants from other countries.
Todd Schulte, president of immigration advocacy group FWD.us, said that extending TPS allows hundreds of thousands of people to continue “contributing to their communities, supporting their families, and strengthening the economy.” But he also called on the Biden administration to extend TPS to people from Nicaragua and other countries.
There are currently about 600,000 Venezuelans protected under TPS, the largest number under the program.
The Biden administration granted TPS to Venezuelans for the first time in 2021, citing political unrest and economic crisis under President Nicolas Maduro, who was sworn in for a third term on Jan. 10.
