- After nearly 30 years as an actress, how do you feel when the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs has just issued Circular 05/2023/TT-BLDTBXH with a list of arduous, toxic and dangerous occupations, including film actors?
After nearly 30 years of working in this profession, I have just seen the State recognize acting as a dangerous profession. Although it is a bit late, it is better than nothing because it is very meaningful for the next generation of actors. It is very true to say that acting is a hard, difficult and dangerous profession.
Many people in this profession always sacrifice and encounter many accidents. I just wonder, when recognized but there is no regime for actors or artists, it is really just on paper, not solving any problem.
Actress and producer Truong Ngoc Anh.
- As an actress and film producer, after this recognition, will there be any changes in buying insurance for actors or dangerous scenes?
Up until now, when making films, we have always bought insurance for the whole crew, not just the actors. I think that if acting is recognized as a dangerous profession, there should be a regime for them. For example, when paying taxes, actors often have to pay the most.
Of course, having a high income means paying a lot of taxes. But when it is recognized as a dangerous profession, is there any special regime for actors, at least in terms of paying taxes, as an example? That is the spirit, but I know that everything must be done step by step and cannot be changed immediately.
I recommend that there should be a more special regime so that later on the recognition of actors as a dangerous profession can be implemented. If recognition is left unchecked, then... I understand that the leadership agencies are changing and want clear regulations in the art professions. Performing organizations are changing to be closer to artists. For example, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City is changing to be closer to artists.
Truong Ngoc Anh shared that accidents on set happen all the time.
- When knowing that actors are included in the list of dangerous and toxic professions, many people have expressed their opinions that this profession is not so hard while we still see news about action actors having accidents while filming. What is the opinion of actress Truong Ngoc Anh? Will this new circular help change the audience's thinking about the acting profession?
It's not just action movie actors who get injured or face danger. There are many other actors who have to stay up all night, not eat enough, get sick, go to emergency rooms... while making movies.
They have many problems, not just fighting scenes that cause injuries. Many people only see the surface of the acting profession, that they are dressed well or have high salaries, but that is not true. Actors also have many personal pressures and difficulties in life, but sometimes they do not express them all so that the audience can understand them. Because I think that in the end, artists must have the support of the audience to survive.
- During your career as an actress, have you had any memorable accidents?
I once had a real accident while filming a torture scene where I was being pushed head-first into water. The scene involved many people, and the shot was difficult and had to be shot multiple times. Although I had planned it carefully, an accident during filming resulted in me getting punched in the eye. Of course, the whole crew had to stop filming that day.
My eyes were swollen and I thought I might go blind after that punch. I had to go to the emergency room and take medicine, but the tears kept flowing for days. To this day, my stunt double apologizes to me everywhere he goes, but it wasn’t his fault. When filming, accidents are very common.
When filming Ao Lua Ha Dong, I had to climb the cat-eye rock mountain barefoot or walk on asphalt roads to serve the realistic close-up camera angles. Days of walking barefoot left my feet bruised and the climax was when the cat-eye rock scratched my foot while doing the climbing scene.
Not only me but also other actors have had accidents. Especially stunt actors. They are an indispensable part of film crews but are rarely recognized. They contribute silently and suffer many injuries.

- Many fans have been waiting for a long time but still haven't seen Truong Ngoc Anh return to acting?
Early next year, I will return with two film projects that I have cherished for a long time. In the past few years, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficult market, I have not been able to make films, but now I see the light. I hope that my return will be supported by the audience.
