Thai Nguyen province preserves and promotes the value of intangible cultural heritage and traditional festivals

That is why Thai Nguyen province has a population of over 1.3 million people, but has 51/54 ethnic groups living and working together. With 8 main ethnic groups, of which ethnic minorities have more than 384,000 people (accounting for approximately 30% of the population). Being a midland area, half plain, half mountain, Thai Nguyen inherits the quintessence of the Red River Delta culture, as well as the uniqueness of the culture of the ethnic minorities in the mountains, which few places have. With these characteristics, the fields of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Thai Nguyen also have unique features, rich in identity and diversity.

Up to now, Thai Nguyen province has 550 intangible cultural heritages inventoried and listed, of which 23 intangible cultural heritages have been listed as national intangible cultural heritages, such as: Tac Xinh dance of San Chay ethnic group (Phu Luong district), Van Mountain - Vo Mountain Festival (Dai Tu district), Tan Cuong tea growing and processing knowledge (Thai Nguyen city), Soong Co singing of San Diu ethnic group..., of which many intangible heritages are associated with community tourism spots to attract tourists.

Along with the system of relics, 189 festivals spread throughout the province are held annually. Each locality has its own traditional festivals with unique characteristics, which are places for cultural and religious activities of the people, such as: the Harvest Festival of the San Chay ethnic group in Tuc Tranh commune, Phu Luong district; Soong Co singing club in Dong Hy district, etc.

Festivals in Thai Nguyen are divided into three distinct types. The first are historical and cultural festivals commemorating great people, those who have contributed to the country and homeland. Typically: Van Mountain - Vo Mountain Festival, Dai Tu district, held on the 4th of January (Commemorating the merits of General Luu Nhan Chu, the son of Van Yen commune, Dai Tu district. He was one of 18 people who, together with Le Loi, established the Lung Nhai Oath (in 1416), became a founding hero of the Later Le Dynasty and held the position of Prime Minister); Duom Temple Festival takes place on the 6th of January, Phu Luong district (Commemorating the merits of the son-in-law Duong Tu Minh, who had the merit of fighting the Song invaders under the Ly Dynasty); "Vo Nhai at the origin" festival...

The second type is traditional cultural festivals, with many unique contents, imbued with the identity of ethnic minorities in the mountainous region. The general meaning of the festivals is to pray for a new year of favorable weather and wind for a bountiful harvest, and for livestock and poultry to develop without disease. In addition, since ancient times, festivals have been a place for men and women to meet, exchange and have fun before entering the new production season. Some notable festivals include: Ban Ten Spring Festival (spring festival of the Mong ethnic group); Tet Nhay Festival of the Dao people (Thai Nguyen); ATK Long Tong Festival of Dinh Hoa (traditional festival of the Tay - Nung ethnic group); Season praying ceremony of the San Chi people...

Finally, there are many large religious festivals such as: Hang Pagoda Festival (Thai Nguyen city); Hang Pagoda Festival (Dinh Hoa district); Binh Thuan Pagoda Festival (Dai Tu district); Phuong Do Communal House, Cau Muoi Communal House - Temple - Pagoda (Phu Binh district); Luc Giap Temple (Pho Yen city), Hich Temple (Dong Hy district)...

With the characteristic of a province with cultural diversity of ethnic communities currently living in the province, in recent years, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has actively implemented many projects to preserve and promote the value of intangible cultural heritage such as: collecting and restoring the Harvest Festival of the Dao Lo Gang ethnic group in Vo Nhai district; Gau Tao Festival of the Mong ethnic group in Phu Luong district; lullabies of the Nung Phan Slinh people in La Dum hamlet, Van Han commune, Dong Hy district; Cau An ritual of the Tay people in Nghinh Tuong commune, Vo Nhai district; San Chay people's wedding; Duom Temple Festival (Phu Luong); Phuong Do Communal House Festival (Phu Binh); restoring Mo Ga Communal House Festival (Vo Nhai).

The restoration of folk songs and dances of ethnic minorities has also received attention and investment, such as: Restoring the Ru Nghe puppetry troupe, Dong Thinh commune (Dinh Hoa), Tham Roc puppetry troupe, Binh Yen commune (Dinh Hoa); Luon coi; Vi singing. In addition, maintaining and expanding Then singing - Tinh lute clubs, Tac Xinh dance clubs, Soong Co singing clubs to preserve culture, serve the community and develop tourism.

Through annual inspection and evaluation, the organization and management of festivals in Thai Nguyen province has always done a good job of preserving and promoting its own identity; at the same time, absorbing and integrating the culture of each ethnic group and locality... as shown in the fact that festivals are not only the participation of specific subjects (local people, ethnic groups, religions), but have attracted a large number of tourists from all over the world and regardless of ethnicity or religion to join in the fun. Along with that, festivals cannot lack folk games, dances, and songs typical of local ethnic groups, but there are also many modern games such as volleyball, football, badminton, arts, cuisine...

In order to promote the effectiveness of organizing festivals associated with tourism development and promoting the tourism image of Thai Nguyen province, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has proactively coordinated with departments, branches and sectors to guide localities to effectively implement the work of developing plans, issuing documents guiding the organization of festivals to submit to competent authorities for approval, establishing Steering Committees and Organizing Committees of festivals; directing, organizing festivals and coordinating implementation according to the provisions of Decree No. 110/2018/ND-CP dated August 29, 2018 of the Government on the management and organization of festivals.

The spirit of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thai Nguyen province is to organize festivals on an appropriate scale to ensure safety, economy, no ostentation, no formality; promote the cultural traditions of the nation, serve the spiritual and cultural needs of the people, contribute to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the Vietnamese nation and promote the socio-economic development of the locality.

The festivals have created a joyful, exciting and attractive atmosphere, meeting the cultural, religious and spiritual needs of the people; contributing to educating the tradition and morality of remembering the source of drinking water; preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the Vietnamese people and promoting local socio-economic development.
