Areca nut prices increase to record level of 94,000 - 100,000 VND

At this time last year, the price of areca nuts only fluctuated from 13,000 to 15,000 VND/kg, but now the price of fresh areca nuts in many provinces and cities fluctuates from 80,000 to 100,000 VND/kg, which has doubled compared to the beginning of this year. This is the price that helps many areca nut growers earn hundreds of millions of VND from harvesting and selling areca nuts.

Currently, farmers in Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces are busy harvesting areca nuts. In Quang Ngai, areca nuts are being purchased by traders at the garden at a record price of 94,000 - 100,000 VND, an increase of more than 7 times compared to last year, helping growers earn from tens to hundreds of millions of VND.

Ms. Le Thi Lien, Tien Lanh commune, Tien Phuoc midland district (Quang Ngai) planted 3,000 areca trees around her garden. Of these, 200 trees are harvested from August to December. Currently, the selling price of areca in this garden is 94,000 VND/kg, while in the same period last year it was only 13,000 VND.

With this price, her family expects to earn more than 250 million VND. "This is the first time fresh areca nuts have increased in price like never before. Currently, traders are constantly hunting for orchards with areca nuts to buy. Now it is the middle of the season, if it ends, the selling price may increase further," she predicted.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vu, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Nam province, said that the whole province has 926.03 hectares, of which the newly planted areca area is 92.6 hectares, the areca area for products is 707 hectares, the areca area for products is 111.78 quintals/hectare, the output reaches 7,903 tons/crop/year.

According to Mr. Vu, there are many reasons for the high price of areca nuts, because the output source is strong and if in the past it was only exported to the Chinese market, now the market has expanded to countries such as China, Taiwan (China) and India, they buy fresh areca nuts from Vietnam much more vigorously, with the purpose of producing areca candy.

Besides, the purchasing and consumption of areca nuts are also more systematic, because now there are facilities purchasing areca nuts in Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, then drying them, reselling them to traders for export and the market demand is high so the price of areca nuts increases every day.

Explaining the reason for the record price increase of areca nuts, some traders said that the price has increased and remained high for many months because China has been buying very strongly. As soon as areca nuts are picked, they are bought. Many owners of "kilns" that buy and process areca nuts also said that this year China has not shown any signs of reducing its purchases, so the price has been increasing continuously.

Duc Linh taro has a good harvest and good price.

In mid-October, it is the peak harvest season in Tan Ha commune, Duc Linh district, Binh Thuan. Mr. Vu Van Thin, a farmer in Tan Ha commune, shared: This summer-autumn crop, his family planted 2 hectares of taro. Thanks to favorable weather, the yield of this harvest was about 1.5 tons/sao, with an average selling price of 25,000 VND/kg, so after deducting expenses, the profit was more than 20 million VND/sao. Meanwhile, at this time last year, due to lower productivity and selling prices, people only earned half the profit, about 10 million VND/sao.

According to research, this year, in addition to weather conditions, plus farmers who are willing to invest in production, taro has achieved quite high productivity. Not only is the crop good, but farmers who grow taro also have good prices, with traders coming to the fields to buy at 24,000 - 26,000 VND/kg. According to households, people are growing 2 types of taro, of which yellow wax taro because it was only experimentally cultivated two years ago, the yield is not high and the market is not yet open. Purple taro alone accounts for 90% because farmers have been used to producing it for nearly ten years, consuming both the domestic and export markets.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Suoi - a long-time agricultural product buyer in Dong Ha commune, Duc Linh district said: "This year, local people have had a big success in the taro harvest with the purchase output from the beginning of the season to date reaching nearly 3,000 tons. At the beginning of the season, the purchase price was up to 26,500 VND/kg, now it is at 23,000 VND/kg. From now until the end of the season, about 1,000 tons of taro in the field will be purchased in the field, classified and transported for consumption at wholesale markets in Ho Chi Minh City". Ms. Suoi added that currently, the taro market in Binh Thuan is very favorable, the quality of this agricultural product is favored by customers for fresh consumption and export processing.

High price of tangerine trees, farmers excited

Taking root in Chu Pah (Gia Lai province) for about 5 years now, tangerine trees are being chosen by many farmers to grow on arid, rocky land. Up to now, tangerine trees have brought high income, helping farmers gradually escape poverty and become rich.

Mr. Pham Duc Ly (Dai An 2 village, Ia Khuol commune, Chu Pah district) has been working in Ia Khuol land since 1998. He has spent a lot of effort plowing and collecting rocks and gravel to improve the soil to grow tangerine trees. Originally a motorbike mechanic, his job was unstable and he worked for hire at hydroelectric projects, so when he had saved up some capital, he decided to discuss with his wife to buy a farm to do agriculture. The 1.4-hectare land that Mr. Ly bought near the foot of the mountain is mainly dry gravel, and cassava cannot survive, so the landowner almost abandoned it.

Three years later, nearly 2,000 tangerine trees yielded their first sweet fruits, bringing joy to Mr. Ly and his wife. At a price of 20,000 VND/kg, Mr. Ly is selling them in the garden, and after deducting expenses, the family earned more than 400 million VND. His family's life has gradually become more prosperous.

Similarly, in 2020, Ms. Vu Thi Loan's family (Kon Sa Lang village, Ha Tay commune) also bought more than 1,000 tangerine trees from the Western provinces to plant on an area of 2 hectares of land. While learning directly from tangerine growers and researching on the internet, Ms. Loan gradually mastered the techniques of planting and caring for this citrus fruit tree.

Ms. Loan shared: My family's garden has more than 1,000 tangerine trees, 250 green-skinned pomelo trees, and nearly 100 durian trees that have been planted for 1 year. The more than 1,000 tangerine trees alone yield over 15 tons of fruit each season. With an average selling price of 20,000 VND/kg of tangerine in the garden, each year, after deducting expenses, the family makes a profit of more than 200 million VND.

According to Ms. Loan, this land is sandy and rocky, with a cool climate, so tangerines grow well, giving juicy, sweet fruit. Grown organically, clean tangerines are favored by the market.

In this management period, the Joint Ministry continues not to set aside or use the Petroleum Price Stabilization Fund. In all management periods from the beginning of 2024 to present, the management agency has not used this Fund.

According to the Ministry of Finance - Industry and Trade, the world oil market in this management period (from October 3, 2024 to October 9, 2024) is affected by factors such as: concerns about widespread conflict in the Middle East, a major storm hitting the US causing a sudden increase in fuel demand, ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, etc. The above factors have caused world oil prices in recent days to increase and decrease depending on each commodity, but the upward trend is the main one.
