"The water tank on the plane is located next to the toilet, rarely cleaned and that's the least of passengers' concerns. The water in this tank will be used to make coffee on the plane," Kevin, a flight attendant for a US-based airline, was quoted as saying in a video on TikTok.
Quickly, the clip on the topic "Flight attendants and the "dirty" secrets in the industry attracted great attention from viewers.
Many flight attendants in the US believe that you should not drink coffee or tea made from hot water on the plane (Illustration: iStock).
In the clip, Kevin said that flight attendants clean the coffee pot by pouring the leftover coffee down the toilet. The male flight attendant emphasized that cleaning does not necessarily mean cleaning the coffee pot, just pouring it away.
"When you pour the coffee, to avoid splashing it out, you have to hold the carafe a little close to the toilet hole. I think bacteria or whatever can fly back into the coffee pot," Kevin said.
He encouraged passengers to arrive at the airport 10 minutes early and buy coffee at the waiting terminal.
This isn't the only flight attendant to talk about it. Last year, a former flight attendant, Kat Kamalani, shared a few things she wouldn't do on a plane.
“I would never drink hot water on a plane,” Kat said. The flight attendant also noted that the hot water tank and coffee maker were rarely cleaned.
In 2019, the CUNY Hunter College Food Policy Center conducted a study on "Airline Water."
Among 11 major airlines and 12 regional airlines, they rated Alaska Airlines and Allegiant as the safest. JetBlue and Spirit Airlines were deemed the worst.
The ratings are based on 10 criteria, including fleet size; violations of the Government's Aircraft Drinking Water Rules; and water samples reporting positive E. coli and coliform bacteria.
This study came to the strong conclusion: "Never drink any water on an airplane that is not in a sealed bottle."
Sharing with NBC , Dr. Cedric Spak, an infectious disease specialist at Baylor University Medical Center, people with vulnerable immune systems should stay away from drinks on the plane.
