Rich, diverse, unique art, containing the cultural identity of the nation
On the morning of June 30, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnam Institute of Culture organized a scientific workshop on "Theoretical and practical basis for the development of Vietnamese art in the contemporary context for sustainable development". Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong - Director of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies and Professor, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association co-chaired the workshop.
Attending the workshop were Associate Professor, Dr. Do Lenh Hung Tu - Chairman of the Vietnam Cinema Association, writer Bui Anh Tan - Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Literature and Arts Associations, artist Le Nguyen Hieu - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Dance Artists Association, Dr. Mai Thi Thuy Huong - Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts, speakers, scientists from schools, research institutes, along with delegates, scientific researchers, scholars... in Ho Chi Minh City.
The workshop was organized to study and research, consolidate the theoretical and practical basis for the development of Vietnamese art in the contemporary context for sustainable development, as part of the National Science and Technology Project on Art Development in Vietnam to 2030, with a vision to 2045 chaired by the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts.
In his opening speech at the conference, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Association, emphasized that Vietnam is a country with an extremely rich, diverse, unique art scene that contains the cultural identity of the nation. Along with the history of the nation, Vietnamese art has developed continuously and has achieved many certain achievements to date.
However, despite many important achievements, in the context of strong international integration and increasingly fierce competition for national comprehensive strength in the international arena, the development of Vietnamese art is not commensurate with the potential and expectations set by the Party, State and people.
From this reality, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien raised the issue of "requiring Vietnamese culture and art to have a new perspective, new policies and drastic direction and orientation to overcome limitations and promote the strengths of the industry, promoting the development of national art to be worthy of its inherent role and position."
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien also affirmed: "In such a context, comprehensive, systematic, interdisciplinary research and approaching art from different dimensions with the goal of developing Vietnamese art for sustainable development is extremely necessary and urgent."
The workshop focused on key issues such as: Research history, theories, approaches and concepts related to art development associated with sustainable development in the world and Vietnam; Trends, principles and methodologies in research and assessment of sustainable development in the world and in Vietnam; System of viewpoints, guidelines and policy framework for developing Vietnamese art in the contemporary context towards sustainable development; Identifying factors affecting art development in Vietnam in the contemporary context towards sustainable development.
The workshop received attention from speakers and delegates in Ho Chi Minh City.
Developing Vietnamese culture and arts in the new era requires a renewed perspective.
At the Workshop, delegates focused on discussing issues related to the Workshop's theme. Many papers presented by speakers at the Workshop also overcame theoretical "barriers" to go straight to today's practice.
From the perspective of a policy researcher, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa has proposed three approaches: art in sustainable development, art for sustainable development and art as sustainable development. With this approach, it shows that there has been a move beyond simple thinking, "art as the core of culture is affirmed as one of the fields that has a consistent contribution to achieving economic, social and environmental development goals". Dr. Thanh Hoa also affirmed that art development represents a comprehensive process, integrating political, economic, social and cultural factors with the participation of many subjects related to the creation, distribution and enjoyment of art.
Taking the evidence of the actual development of art in the current context, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tien commented that to develop Vietnamese art and culture in the new era, it is necessary to have a new perspective on social management thinking, policies on human resource training, working environment, work promotion, awareness, responsibility of artists, raising the aesthetic level of the public... from there, artists will have more "space to show their talents", create many works, contribute much to the country, contribute to building and developing Vietnamese culture to develop sustainably and develop synchronously, not locally.
At the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Thi My Huong, with practical evidence, showed part of the current state of public art in Vietnam. Although this is a new concept, in practice, public art works in Vietnam have been and are increasingly developing. In the field of research and theory, this concept has also recently received attention, so Dr. My Huong believes that research on art culture and public art has not kept up with the development speed of public art works in Vietnam.
Researching on Vietnamese music in the digital age, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi My Liem stated that we are currently living in the digital age, digital competition. If we do not look at the negative aspects of science and technology but use science and technology as a means, those applications will be extremely beneficial, not only for contemporary music activities but also contribute to sustainable development and suitability with the times.
In cinema - a field that is a synthesis of many other art fields, however, Associate Professor, Dr. Do Lenh Hung Tu pointed out the shortcomings in terms of mechanisms and policies in this field. "What needs to be done for the Vietnamese film industry to truly develop sustainably", Associate Professor, Dr. Do Lenh Hung Tu answered with 7 solutions after referring to developed film industries in the world such as, the State regularly pays attention to accompanying the strategy of building film corporations; comprehensive investment in cinema; actively discovers and supports film ideas...; needs to pay special attention to advertising strategies, promoting and introducing films through the media; promoting community activities, gradually changing the audience's enjoyment habits...; creating an ecosystem with a system of theaters, film production and distribution companies... expanding film distribution on cross-border platforms, pay TV... to reach more audiences; Overcoming fragmentation and lack of connection, leading to ineffective investment and development.
Discussing at the workshop, artist Le Nguyen Hieu - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Dance Artists Association, director Nguyen Huu Tuan, writer Bui Anh Tan, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies Pham Binh An, Dr. Tran Thanh Nam - Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, Mr. Le Huu Luan - former Director of Ho Chi Minh City Theater, Dr. Doan Minh Ngoc (Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts), Dr. Nguyen Ho Phong (Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture) pointed out the realities, problems, and shortcomings, and at the same time expressed opinions and suggested solutions in the artistic activities of the fields they participated in.
Art is considered an extremely important intrinsic value in sustainable development.
Generations of research demonstrate a common spirit for sustainable development.
In her concluding remarks at the Workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong once again emphasized the importance of the Workshop in the process of implementing the National Science and Technology Project for Art Development in Vietnam to 2030, with a vision to 2045.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong, the Theoretical and Practical Basis is always a difficult and thorny issue at the macro level. However, this part has been studied and presented by researchers of different generations at the Workshop, demonstrating the common spirit of all generations for sustainable development, with foundation and practice, for the development of Vietnamese art in the contemporary context.
Opinions at the Workshop also raised the issue: How to propose solutions for the development of Vietnamese art to stand firm in the contemporary context, for sustainable development, demonstrating national strength in connection with the international community.
From the proposals at the Workshop, in the coming time, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong said that the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts will propose that the Institute for Cultural and Development Studies continue to organize a Workshop related to issues of opportunities, challenges, and solutions to form a Creative City for Ho Chi Minh City. At the same time, she requested that agencies, organizations, and delegates continue to accompany each other so that the solutions are systematized and agreed upon.
Another content that Director Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong mentioned is that it is necessary to focus on solutions related to amending the Investment Law so that the art fields become a priority in the Investment Law. At the same time, Resolution 90, related to socialization, will be reflected in the specific mechanism of Ho Chi Minh City, developing the art field of the City, becoming the focus of other cities in Vietnam.
The Director believes that the policies of the Party and State need to approach the requirements of sustainable development and be associated with the strength of traditional art as well as contemporary art trends, proactively applying advances in science and technology. In addition, it is necessary to focus on solutions related to training Vietnamese human resources, especially in centers such as Ho Chi Minh City.
The contents mentioned by the Director include: issues related to Vietnam closely linked to solutions to raise awareness, diversify, communicate, try to do these things in a diverse, practical way, creating a spread in the community. Change the way of thinking about this issue for the subjects managing related fields in the locality...
"The components sitting here are connecting with each other to create connecting impulses, pulling State management entities to participate in this story," said the Director, and at the same time, informed that the opinions at the Workshop will be received by the Organizing Committee, systematized to have official dispatches, proposals to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the Institute of Cultural Research, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism... All together in one movement so that from the Ho Chi Minh City model, comprehensive solutions for development will be opened./.
