DNVN - On June 28, the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (Naposted) and Ho Chi Minh City National University organized a scientific workshop "Promoting breakthrough and excellent research at universities and research institutes in Ho Chi Minh City".
At the workshop, representatives of scientific research departments from institutes and universities discussed many issues related to the establishment, maintenance and development of scientific research groups in the units. These research groups have produced many valuable reports and scientific works.
However, many research groups cannot avoid difficulties when pursuing large scientific research topics, the biggest limitations of which are human resources and funding. At the same time, the lack of research projects and investment interest in social science and humanities research topics is a serious problem.
The conference attracted the attention of many scientists.
From 2017 to present, the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development has funded 29 projects of strong research groups with a budget of 3-5 billion VND/project. This shows that the number of registered and funded projects is still low, the number of strong research groups, interdisciplinary and inter-disciplinary links is also low; the quality of research has increased but the excellence, breakthrough, and wide-scale impact are not strong...
The Party and the State have had many policies to develop science and technology. Since then, over the past 10 years, Vietnam's scientific research capacity and quality have developed strongly. The number of works published in prestigious international scientific journals (international articles) in Vietnam has increased by about 20% each year, the number of young scientists presiding over national and equivalent science and technology tasks has increased sharply in number at universities and research institutes nationwide.

To promote the development of scientific research, it is extremely important to focus on human resource development policies, invest in modern facilities and equipment, and ensure appropriate research funding through convenient funding mechanisms that are appropriate to the characteristics of scientific research work.
Through the workshop, the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development and the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City pledged to work more closely to contribute to the development of excellent and advanced scientific research. In the future, the Foundation will continue to provide strong support to outstanding young scientists, with a special focus on funding research projects with large, long-term and interdisciplinary goals.
Dr. Pham Dinh Nguyen, Director of the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development, said that the Foundation also promotes international cooperation and sees this as a way to increase both human and financial support for excellent research.
"The Foundation also wants to develop a network of international cooperation in high-level science and technology. Cooperate to learn management and funding experiences in research, and at the same time attract more resources to support Vietnamese scientists, both in terms of human resources and finance," Dr. Pham Dinh Nguyen emphasized.
