Seo Hee-joo could not contain her emotions after receiving the official results from the organizing committee of the 19th Asian Games (Hangzhou, China). The Korean athlete competed for a medal in the wushu sword and spear event. She ranked fourth with a total score of 19.423, only 0.003 points behind Yang Thuy Vi - the bronze medalist.
The Korean female boxer looked sad as she answered the interview. Five years ago at the 18th Asian Games, she also missed the chance to win a medal because of an injury during training right before the competition.
Seo Hee-joo couldn't hold back her tears after the match.
In the swordsmanship test held this morning, Seo Hee-joo scored 9.713 points and ranked third, while Duong Thuy Vi ranked only 6th. However, in the spearmanship test in the afternoon, she only scored 9.710 points, while the Vietnamese martial artist scored 9.726 points. Seo Hee-joo's total score was lower than Thuy Vi's.
The two athletes who won the gold and silver medals were Lai Xiaoxiao (China) and Kiani Zahra (Iran). They, Thuy Vi and Seo Hee-joo are four boxers who have regularly competed at the top of international tournaments for many years.
Seo Hee-joo was born in 1993. She was exposed to martial arts at a very early age thanks to her father running a wushu gym. She loved the performance element more than the fighting element, so she decided to choose the wushu taolu path.
She won the bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games, the gold medal at the 2015 and 2017 World Championships, and the bronze medal at the 2022 World Games. At the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, this beautiful boxer tore her knee ligaments 5 minutes before the match started. She had to withdraw in tears.
Seo Hee-joo, 30, is competing in her last Asian Games and has decided to retire. Not winning a medal is disappointing.
" I was shocked and disappointed when I thought about that moment. Returning to the convention after 5 years, in this final performance, I want to erase that sadness with a great match so that I have no regrets ," Seo Hee-joo expressed.
