Singapore Prime Minister proposes candidate for Speaker of Parliament

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's office said the leader plans to nominate Seah Kian Peng as Speaker of Parliament at the session in early August.

Mr. Seah Kian Peng, 61 years old, is currently a member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), representing the Marine Parade GRC constituency. He entered politics in 2006 and served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament from 2011 to 2016.

In addition to his political career, Mr. Seah Kian Peng was also the CEO of NTUC FairPrice Retail Group. However, he resigned from this position in 2021.

The politician last spoke in Parliament as chair of the Parliamentary Working Group on the Care of Parents Act. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Singapore Olympic Foundation and has previously served on the boards of other organisations such as the Singapore Centre for Social Enterprise and Singtel.

By law, any MP can nominate another person or himself for the position of Speaker. If there is only one nominee, that person will be declared Speaker by the Parliamentary Secretary. If there is more than one, Parliament will hold a vote. The next session of Singapore's Parliament will be on 2 August.

Previously, on July 17, former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin submitted his resignation due to his extramarital affair with female MP Cheng Li Hui and his "unparliamentary" remarks directed at opposition Workers' Party MP Jasmus Lim in the Singapore Parliament last April.
