Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with President Biden on the sidelines of the expanded G7 summit in Japan, discussing measures to strengthen bilateral relations.
Meeting with President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the expanded G7 Summit in Hiroshima today, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that Vietnam-US relations have developed positively, with a focus on economic and trade cooperation.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President Biden agreed on a number of measures to promote bilateral relations and discussed international and regional issues of mutual concern. The two leaders also agreed to maintain delegation exchanges at all levels, especially high-level.
This is the second meeting between Vietnamese and US leaders within six months, after the meeting at the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and related summits in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) in November 2022.
Speaking with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, President Biden highly appreciated the results of his phone call with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the end of March, in which the General Secretary suggested that the two countries make economic, scientific, and technological cooperation the focus and driving force for the relationship.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Biden also agreed on maintaining peace, stability, cooperation, ensuring freedom of navigation and aviation, not using or threatening to use force in international relations, implementing the DOC, and soon signing an effective and efficient COC in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Vietnam-US relations were normalized in 1995. The two countries established a comprehensive partnership in 2013. Last year, Vietnam-US trade turnover reached more than 123 billion USD, an increase of 11% compared to 2021.
The US has been Vietnam's largest export market for many years, while Vietnam is the US's eighth largest trading partner in the world and its largest partner in ASEAN. US foreign direct investment in Vietnam reached 11.4 billion USD, ranking 11th among countries and territories investing directly in Vietnam.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh today also met with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President of the Federation of Comoros Azali Assoumani and leaders of G7 members and many international organizations.
At these meetings, Vietnamese leaders made many important cooperation proposals on economics, trade, investment, digital transformation, green transformation, circular economy, and innovation.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is attending the 49th G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan. This is an event within the framework of the G7 Summit on May 19-22.
The G7, comprising the advanced industrial nations of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Canada and Italy, plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global governance and structure. G7 members own more than half of the world's wealth, account for about 30% of global GDP, and have a market with 10% of the world's population.
This year, Vietnam is one of two Southeast Asian countries invited by Japan to attend the G7 Summit, along with Indonesia. This is the third time Vietnam has attended the G7 Summit and the second time at the invitation of Japan.
